If You Give the Puffin a Muffin by Timothy Young

This was a delightful little book for younger children. My daughter who is four loved the illustrations which were cute and colourful and simplistic. I might have liked to have seen a little more detail in the drawings and background, something to grab her attention and spark questions beyond the Puffin himself.

The book did provide the Puffin with lots of expressions - we like to practise "How do you think he feels" questions when we read! - and I do enjoy the idea of characters breaking the walls between reader, character and author. But it has been done before and more thoughtfully and with more fun: Nibbles the Book Monster springs to mind.

But it was fun and enjoyable and my daughter liked it, so worthy of maybe three and a half stars. In the absence of that option, four stars!

If you had to read "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" or "If you give a Moose a Muffin" to your kid, you get the general idea of what this book is making fun of. The Puffin is self-aware, knows he is in a book, and wants nothing to do with it, and is frankly offended that you are even bothering to offer him something he absolutely doesn't want

Clever story that works even if you are not familiar with the "If you give a mouse a cookie", and is even more fun if you are. There is even reference to Herald and the Magic Crayon.

This is a comical picture book about a angry puffin. Puffin does not like muffins and as a result goes off an a rant. This rant leads him to becoming more enraged because he is a character of yet another book. Puffin, as a result, starts to think about how he can get out of this book. He finds his magic crayons, draws two doors (one door lead him to another book) and meets the author where he expresses his anger then walks away.

At first, I wrote a not so good review about If You Give the Puffin a Muffin, basically saying I didn't get it and that it wasn't funny, and that I didn't understand all the good reviews. Following my review, I was contacted by Schiffer Publishing, who very kindly offered to send me a review copy of the first book (The Angry Little Puffin) so that I could understand what was so good about If You Give the Puffin a Muffin. And they did! All the way from the US to the UK in just a few days! And my toddler has loved the Angry Little Puffin from the second he saw "the blue book" (that's what he calls the book), we've read it so many times already.

The Angry Little Puffin is hilarious, the Puffin has such a huge personality. We find that again in If You Give the Puffin a Muffin. I still think it might be a bit difficult to understand for younger children, but it is really fun to have more of the Puffin's adventures and see him get mad and go onj about it. I liked the nods at other children's books as well, I think it would be fun to find out what they are with an older child.

Disclaimer - Thank you to Schiffer Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a free digital copy in exchange for an honest review, and to Schiffer Publishing for sending me a review copy of the Angry Little Puffin.

Very cute book. Great illustrations. My children loved the humor and the hints of the books by Laura Numeroff. We hope to read the others in the series soon.

Dear Angry Little Puffin,

How dare Mr. Young try to feed you a muffin simply because it rhymes with puffin! What is wrong with that man? You raised very good points with the other animals. Well, not the pig, but definitely the cheetah.

I noticed that you broke the fourth wall. Have you thought about, maybe, working with Deadpool? Yes, I know he is far more violent than you are, but I think you two would get along quite well.

Yes, I know that you are for children, and he is for an older crowd, but if he were to have a pet, it would be you.

Seriously, though, ALP, it was awesome how you taught your readers about children’s literature and wall breaking. You also worked in some neat thing about being creative. It’s just a shame you had to be offered a muffin instead of a fish.

Still, it was a very good sequel. Well worth a muffin.

Long live Puffins!!

I thought this was funny and made me feel nostalgic because it touched on some other childhood classics. I'm not sure how much of this humor would go over a child's head but I think adults would enjoy it while reading it during storytime.

This book hit all the right notes for me and my nephew: it has rhyming, an interesting animal (that we had to look up facts about), and a large helping of silliness. There's something about picture books that break with tradition and have characters that question the author and refuse to do what they're supposed to that is absolutely delightful. We already read this book twice and it will be getting many more rereads.

**Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this book**
If You Give the Puffin a Muffin is an entertaining children's book about a very meta puffin. Yes, I said meta. You see, Puffin knows he's in a book. He's also not very happy about being in the book, nor is he happy about being offered a muffin, no matter how delicious it is. Puffins don't eat muffins. That's just silly.

Follow Puffin as he tries to escape the book (and the muffin), all the while offering other suggestions to the reader (and author) so he can be left alone.

I found the story amusing, and my three year old son listened as I read it to him. He enjoyed the illustrations as we read. I think if he were a little older, he might've laughed along with me, but, alas, he is just beginning his reading journey.

I suppose the story may not be to everyone's taste, but I thoroughly enjoyed how fussy Puffin was, and how he snarked to the reader as the story went on. It was definitely a unique children's book, and I think parents will either really like it or find it perhaps a bit off-putting for their child. I guess it depends on the parent. Young readers might also find it to be a fun read. Some may question why Puffin is so angry, but others will enjoy it for what it is.

I think If You Give the Puffin a Muffin deserves four stars from me.

I was prepared to tell Timothy Young to leave the muffin books to Numeroff, but I am glad I read before I judged. To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the “If you give” books, but Timothy has changed my mind. His cantankerous puffin absolutely does not eat muffins, he doesn’t like being in a story, and his crayons can run away. Absolutely loved this book.
