I enjoyed this book even though parts were slow to me. I would recommend this book. It was my first book to read by this author.

While this.book had some flaws (particularly I found with the dialogue), it was an extremely enjoyable fast paced read, with a pretty likable protagonist and themes and emotions that were relatable as a female reader. I enjoyed the fact that while in part it was a contemporary novel about online dating and romantic relationships, it also explored the varying roles that friends play in you life.

I liked that it was a novel that explored a lot of ideas about love and it's conception and projection, while also being a fun story to read. I was also glad to be reading a modern novel that wasn't turning into erotica in the first two chapters.... However, this all came to an end by the final few chapters, which felt kind of a shame - what was a text that was holding up a bit of integrity, collapsed in the final 30 pages when of course the female protagonist has to have a one night stand with the neighbour that has only provoked fear in her through the whole text. For me, this left the novel with a bitter taste of "I liked this book as much as I was expected to."

I’m obsessed with Dolly Alderton, what can I say. She just really makes a single gal feel seen. I think Everything I Know About Love will always be my favorite, but this story was also full of so much humor and insightfulness. Tore through it.

I loved this book. It made me laugh out loud at the relationship between Nina and Lola. It reminded me of one of my closest friends. The British humor and sarcasm was hysterical and was so reminiscent of her first book, Everything I Know About Love. I preferred that one solely because I felt the ending was a little rushed and left me without as much resolution as I’d hoped for. But I suppose that life is not always wrapped up with a pretty bow either, so perhaps it’s fitting.

The story
Nina is a thirty something, single and successful Londoner. A good writer and cookbook author, she has managed to stop teaching and make her hobby a full time occupation. But behind the success, she is single and wishes she wasn’t, her father is struggling with his health and it doesn’t seem like her mother understands the seriousness of the situation. When Nina meets Max from a dating app, they find similarities and companionship, until he withdraws and “ghosts” her.

My thoughts
Dolly Alderton perfectly captures the life stage where every one around you is pairing off, not even with the most worthy of partners, having babies and moving on with their lives, leaving you behind. The specimens that are left in the dating pool don’t have ticking biological clocks and can keep fluttering from one to the next while they promise commitment, and run away from it soon thereafter. Her insights are sprinkled beautifully throughout the story and hit the mark. I think it’s a beautiful read ❤️
