EAP has been a favorite of mine since childhood. When I saw this at the library, I had to pick it up. I’m so glad I did. It felt so teenage angst. So Poe. So melancholy and macabre. I enjoyed this immensely. It was a beautiful read and I was so happy to have his words braided through the novel. Thank you for taking the time to write it, Dear Author.

Content Warnings: sexual harassment, parental abuse, cheating, self harm, alcoholism, blood, gore, surgery, guns / gun violence, strangulation, drowning, physical assault, horror themes.

Basically this can be summed up with: you should probably know who Edgar Allan Poe is prior to reading this book because the themes deal heavily with morbidity, death and the macabre with the fascinating inclusion of Lenore as a muse. I loved the author's spin on muses and would love to read further works that deal with this. Personally, I am not a massive fan of all of the high-action; but the story and concept were compelling and saw me happily through to the end. It's clear that this was a subject the author was passionate about and on which research was done. I plucked this book up at random on sale and am astonishingly happy with what I paid for!

It has all the makings of a good book (depth of character, a doomed romance, mysterious supernatural forces) but just sort of feels like the author is going through the motions. There's no soul here. It's not bad, but it's definitely uninspiring.

Eh, not my kind of book. Also I think it would've been more interesting if other people couldn't see muses, because then the element of madness and delusion becomes a lot more evident.

What I Loved:
-I love Poe. The nods to his poems, the accuracy of his history...I loved it all.
-The poems in Poe style are well done. I recognized so many elements of future tales in this book and that was amazing.
-The concept of a real flesh and blood muse is very cool.

Who Should Read It:
-Poe fans
-Readers who like dark, sad stories
-Poetry fans

I very, very, very much enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. It is a very unique take on Edgar Allan Poe's youth and start of his incredible journey. I loved how the paranormal elements tied flawlessly into his history and poetry. I did have to admit I was a bit thrown off in the beginning that in this world a physical muse is just something that exists, but that confusion was easily overcome with Lenore's perspective and her personality. I'm so glad I picked this book up!
