I'm lukewarm about this book, it's the first in the series so there were a lot of set ups for the subsequent books which is fine but I didn't feel much for the characters especially when they fight a lot over his withholding of his secrets. I will continue the series though but I don't particularly care for the overall plot lines.

Once upon a time, back in the mid to late 2000s, high school and college aged Dina tore through Gaelen Foley's portfolio like she was about to go blind the next day. She had one of the first full on family series that I remember obsessing over (I still want to smack Lucien from [b:Lord of Fire|958537|Lord of Fire (Knight Miscellany, #2)|Gaelen Foley|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1554636732l/958537._SY75_.jpg|943447], years later), as well as various other series about pirates, mistaken identities, highlanders, and Vikings (all in the same book, sometimes).
So, in the process of cleaning out my book shelves, I found this one. The Inferno Club, a predecessor to [b:Who's That Earl|50347065|Who's That Earl (Love and Let Spy, #1)|Susanna Craig|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1597815220l/50347065._SY75_.jpg|75292609] and [b:A Rogue by Any Other Name|10428803|A Rogue by Any Other Name (The Rules of Scoundrels, #1)|Sarah MacLean|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327928208l/10428803._SY75_.jpg|15333212]. Spies, secret societies, a manipulative (but well intentioned) handler, and the women who get swept up in all the antics. I think in retrospect, this was a fun series...In modern times, I don't know if it holds up as well.
It's not too cringey, but there is a definitive lack of humor, you're not really getting any quirky, loveable side characters, or even a lot of banter (the main heroine is kind of annoying at times, but I can't help think that this was the norm for the time?). Also, diversity is a joke, and the spicy scenes are more emotively descriptive (there are some waves, some stars in the sky, molasses running down a hill into a cool lake with hidden depths...you get the drift).
All in all, it's not the worst older romance book (it's definitely a lot less problematic than some), and a nice mindless read overall.

Not my usual cup of tea. Too much angst and intrigue involved. Max's family has been involved in a secret society that was formed to protect the world from another secret society. Max's angst from being taken from his family as a boy to train as a warrior, and the difficulties of hiding his identity from his wife were a bit too much for me.

This book has been sitting on my to read list for an incredibly long time for some reason I thought I had read it already and forgot to add it so I was putting off reading it AGAIN turns out I never had. It was an enjoyable read but I found myself skipping over some slower parts.

Ah Max. I like the whole disguise and covert thing he has going on and his odd but funny way of going about finding a wife. Daphne's character is enjoyable. I like how she's torn between her fascination and attraction for Max and her fear of what marriage might mean for her.
*UPDATE*
Since first picking up this book, I've read it two more times and still found it enjoyable. I especially love how Daphne handles find out about Max's secret life as an agent. I like how Foley has kept Daphne's reaction real. I would have gotten angry and felt betrayed as well.

Good book but the narratives are sometimes too long. I found myself skipping some parts.
