The ending was confusing. How were all the angels in New Nazareth defeated? And was Benji in his normal human body or was he seraph the whole time?

Definitely not for the faint of heart (it’s me, I’m the faint of heart), but this book sucked me in immediately and didn’t let me go for a second. By the end the blood and guts definitely felt like a little too much, and I’m still not sure how to feel about the ending. I saw another review on this site that said the book was too preoccupied with tumblr-esque ideas on identity, and that’s definitely the case. It gets a little distracting at times. However, this is a book written about teenagers for teenagers, so I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing. Ultimately, a great read and I will be picking up White’s other books as soon as I recover from this one.

VERY GORY! Had to skip many many paragraphs of this book because the author just loves body horror (which in this novel is a metaphor for transness). The world-building was impressive, and the found family storyline is fantastic, but I just found this a bit fast and gross. I really enjoyed the reflection on evangelicalism and malthusians, but it is INTENSE! I guess I would recommend for high schoolers thinking about gender who really like gross things and thrillers, or to adults willing to confront the pain of transphobia in a very visceral way
