Great world-building, charming characters, wholesome story. It got a little bit cheesy and overly sentimental towards the last quarter, but it was tolerable. I definitely liked the beginning best thought I have to admit. This is a good read if you just want something whimsical and happy. Reading about these characters feels like sitting by a warm fire with old friends.

This is one of those books that needs to be read in a single setting. I feel like I waited too long to read it only because I was so busy.
I normally never read fantasy books, in fact I have zero interest in them regardless of how good people say they are. However, after everyone said that you don’t need to like fantasy in order to like this I finally finished it and what a beautiful book it is.
Linus Baker has lead a fairly normal life. In fact so normal, that he has the same routine every single day- Going to the job that he’s incredibly good at however he’s is a social worker and has pushed aside the fact that these kids are often abused and instead has just follow the rules and regulation book on how to do the job.
When Linus is assigned to go to a new house, where all the kids have some mystical powers, it’s so unlike his daily routine that he’s not sure how he is going to take it. At first he considers it just a job, but instead becomes incredibly attached to the kids and their powerful forces.
So much more about this but can be said without revealing anything who is actually reading this review. The book is truly about how different people, regardless of what may or may not be considered moral or immoral, are still human beings and have feelings and can love just like anybody else..

Oh my word this book! The way the characters teach each other to be inclusive! As my son puts it, not just being an ally but an accomplice in the lives of others. Taking people for who they are, loving them wherever they are in their journey, and not asking them to change for you. Yes please!
I know Mr Klune is speaking a good bit about being accomplices with the queer community. I see his story as being applicable also to my beautiful people who are autistic, Deaf, a different culture or skin color. All of it. I’m so here for the way he tells this story, not just the outcome.

This was a cute little magical adventure! I really enjoyed all of the kids, and the entire storyline of when Linus was in the house and everything he encountered. I wasn't a fan of all of the life lessons being taught, I felt like it was a bit repetitive and "preachy". Linus learning to finally stand up for himself was enlightening, as his character often annoyed me. But the sweet kids on the island... they shed so much light on everything that I found myself enjoying anytime they would get into something. Lucy's storyline specifically was very entertaining!! Overall, I had higher expectations for this one, but it was still a cute read.

Man, this book was extremely cute. I read it extremely quickly (under three days) and that's because I haven't felt this engaged in a fiction book in a long time. I think it was somewhat corny at times, but the cuteness of it all excuses any corniness.
I liked the whimsical writing style, it reminded me somewhat of Terry Pratchett. The writing style is strange to get into at first, but the story goes forward quickly and keeps you on your toes. I love Linus and Arthur, they're wonderful characters -- I think some of the children are fleshed out quite well (Lucy, Talia and Sal are great characters), but some I didn't see much of and seemed less realistic than the others (Chauncy's obsession with bellhops is a whimsical but strange choice, Phee we see very little of and I didn't get a sense of her character, and Theodore doesn't speak English and is animal-like, so it's difficult to get a sense of his personality).
Despite those few shortcomings, it works really well as a story and definitely made me want to cry. And, most of all, it's strengthening my hope for fiction books that are actually good and emotionally engaging. I've read a lot of duds this year, and reading something well-written and emotional really helps get my motivation up.

This book is the sweetest story I’ve read in a long time. I’m usually more of a romance reader but the found family really got me here. I cried through the last few chapters just so touched at the impact these characters had on one another. It was beautiful. I’d give it 20 stars if I could.
