The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller

⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Song of Achilles is about Patroclus, who accidentally kills a man and, therefore, is exiled. After he gets banned, he meets Patroclus, the king's son. They become best friends and lovers. After Helen, the most beautiful woman in the country, goes missing, a war begins, and Achilles is supposed to be the hero. However, this does not end the way it was expected to go.

The first part of this book was perfect. Although I wouldn't say, I liked the second part of it. At first, the book goes more into depth about the characters' relationships. It was interesting to read how the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus developed, but on the other hand, it never completely developed. I felt terrible for Patroclus on several occasions throughout this book because of how underappreciated he was. Achilles did not nearly respect him the way he was supposed to. This also becomes very clear at the end when Patroclus is put in the mass grave. I was in tears.

Seeing how many times I've DNFed this book for various reasons (mainly for how much the first half dragged on for too long), I thought i would be disappointed by the end of it.

But then i read the second half and OMG...I couldn't stop reading, and when I wasn't reading, I was constantly thinking about it.
The writing is a MASTERPIECE. I've never seen love described in such a breathtakingly beautiful way as Madeline Miller did here. I kept on reading some sentences and paragraphs over and over again in awe.

The last part definitely shattered my soul in pieces.

The 5 stars speak for themselves. I don't think any sort of review can convey my emotions; the joy, happiness, passion, sadness, heartbreak, I felt when I read this. I feel like I died and then revived and died once more, all in 300+ pages. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. The cause of my demise and the skips in my heart. Incredible. (A big thank you to Jackie who shoved this book in my face since the day I met her. I finally did it. Thanks.)

Honestly I’m really quite disappointed by this book. I was soooo excited to read it from all the hype it has gotten and for some reason I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it’s Greek mythology or something? Again with all greek
mythology books it was confusing with name after name and I found it really difficult to follow. In all honestly I just wasn’t much a fan of the story the entirety of the war I just wasn’t very interested in. I like when Patroclus was becoming a medic to be fair that was cool. Just seeing Achilles deevelove as a character was really saddening and I wish he could’ve overcame his pride. The end didn’t have me crying which everyone said it would and I think it’s because I predicted it. As soon as I read “Achilles standing over hectors dead body with relief flushed through him” I could only assume there was one reason for that and I was correct. Oh and Achilles son is a horrible wee thing do not like that boy he didn’t want his dad to have any happiness in the afterlife and was horrible to woman ew. It was nice seeing Thetis and Patroclus bonding in the end tho and her allowing him and Achilles to be together forever in the underworld was beautiful to see.
