OK so this entire book is about the author's mother dying of cancer. You need to know this upfront because it will totally suck you in, but you might not be in the right mental space to want it in your life.
It's wonderful and sad, and funny at times, and I had to stop listening a couple of times as it is understandably rough going. The writing is really great, maybe only the very end felt a bit more dull. And it's also about food. Lots and lots of Korean food.
And it's somehow so relatable even though most everything in the book remains completely outside my personal experience.

This book was awesome. I am so glad I picked it up. I read it slowly making sure to soak it in. It broke my heart in places and healed it in others. Read it ASAP.

My husband is Korean. I loved his mom (she passed in 2005), and this book brought back a ton of memories of her life and her death. Recommend for all (especially those who miss their Asian moms or mother-in-laws). Listened on audio read by the author.

so so good, but also difficult to read at times because it's very sad. family relationships are so delicate and complicated.

Phew… first book to make me cry in quite awhile.
It’s difficult to review such a personal book. While I’m not Korean, there are some things that I related to so so deeply. Trying desperately to connect with a passed loved one through food. And by extension trying to connect with your culture. Yeah.
