Review - I loved the drive of the novel, not just a romantic story, but with an underlying mystery. Very similar set-up to the works of Stephanie Laurens, who I really love. An excellent book, and I look forward to reading more. I really loved both Ross and Sophia, although I did find the connection between John and Nick (not to give away too much) difficult to comprehend at times. However I loved Sophia's backbone and her certainty that what she was doing was right.

Kleypas is a consistent and lovely writer, and I binged nearly all of her historicals last year as audiobooks. I was delighted to find another new-to-me option through my library before a long car trip, but I tempered my expectations having read the first in the series, which was dated. This version underwent some revisions (presumably to remove offensive material), but I have no point of reference.
It was fine! Not the best in terms of the distinctive characterizations and story I've come to expect from this author, but overall enjoyable. Sophia started out strong with an interesting edge, but faded away as the relationship progressed. Ross was a solid hero. It just lacked a bit of depth and color.
That said, did I immediately check out the next book in the series? Yes. Yes, I did.

Trigger warnings: death of a sibling (in the past), grief, violence, gun violence, blood, kidnapping, police brutality, misogyny, death of a spouse (in the past), death during childbirth (in the past), death of an infant during childbirth (in the past)
I think I've realised that the time has come for me to stop reading Lisa Kleypas books because there's just something about them that NEVER works for me. The dynamic between her heroes and heroines is always strangely...confrontational and there's often an element of condescension between them that gives me the ick. This was no exception.
Like, I did really enjoy the idea of the heroine going undercover to get revenge on the man who essentially gave her brother a death sentence and then realising that there was more to her brother than she knew and that Sir Ross isn't a terrible person and also maybe she's caught feelings for him. But it felt like the second they hooked up, at least 50% of the actual plot just got thrown out the window in favour of him sticking his dick in her all over the house. And, like, I'm here for a well placed sex scene but I also want the actual plot of the story to keep going, you know?
It got there in the end, but I definitely wasn't frothing at the mouth over these two the way that a lot of people on Bookstagram seem to be.

This was actually really cute . . . The thing about regency romances that I love so much is that despite all of the common marriages of convenience back then these regency romances tend to have couples that can't seem to keep their hands off each other and are madly in love.
It's encouraging even if it's fiction. In the meantime, this book is good and Lisa Kleypas never disappoints.
