The verses here are spare and abstract, sometimes leaning toward imagism, though mostly less concrete. Taken as a whole, the collection sometimes gets a bit repetitive, but there are some truly beautiful moments here, and the author deftly evokes the themes of pain and loss, environmental degradation, and reclaiming history. Definitely compelling.

Good, if a bit repetitive. I really liked the opening, and loved poem 13, 30, and 32. I'll be reading more of Hook's work but maybe not her poetry, because although it is well written, I don't think it's exactly what I like in poetry.

Rest in power and love, bell hooks!
While I was mostly confused with most of the pieces in this collection, I still loved all the choices of the words in each poems. I just think I haven’t known bell hooks well enough to be able to capture the meaning hidden behind each piece. I sensed the elegy and the life of the nature she was sharing, but capturing the specifics were more challenging. I will read this again after finishing her other essays for better exposure to her works so I could appreciate this collection more.

Already completely biased toward bell hooks, this poetry found me at a completely coincidental and personal moment that will forever mark it as profound and special to me.
