I'm not one that usually reads Contemporary novels but this story really intrigued me and I really wanted to pick it up and read it. I didn't really know what to expect but I ended up absolutely loving it! I thought it was so interesting and it definitely made me cry quite a few times. I really enjoyed getting to know all of these characters and really getting to know Declan's and Juliet's story and background. I think all of these characters were wonderfully written and developed and that made this book so much better. I also really liked the format of this book with the alternating point if views between Juliet and Declan with the letters at the beginning of the chapter.

Trigger warnings: death of a parent (in the past), death of a sibling (in the past), grief, panic attacks, mental health, incarceration of a parent, alcoholism, car accident, suicide attempt (in the past)

Oh, my heart. I put off reading this for about a thousand years (along with its sequel), and then once I picked it up, I flew through it in less than 24 hours. It reminded me a lot of Katie McGarry's books, which I was OBSESSED with back in the day. This is, at its heart, two kids who are struggling with grief and loss and picking up the pieces of their lives while feeling absolutely unlovable.

I adored the protagonists and the dynamic between them. The letter writing was lovely, and I was genuinely surprised by some of the directions the story took. It's been a horrifyingly long time - nearly a month - since I read a new-to-me 5 star book and I'm SO glad this one hit the mark.

4.5 stars for epic feels! Not a perfect book in some ways, but it kept making me want to cry!
Declan especially is just full of all the feelings and I want to hug him! Juliet is a little harder for me, but her grief is still really well written. As was her relationship with her dad, I felt the disconnect due to grief was great and in fact was a little sad it was so neatly tied off.
In fact that was my main gripe about the book - it’s all suddenly sorted towards the end. I get it, but life doesn’t suddenly turn around for everyone going through hard times so that felt a little off for me.
My favourite things were the relationship between Declan and Frank, and the English teacher. 💙 both showing that sometimes all you need is for someone to see past the outside for a second.

Aight for a YA book. I feel bad giving it two stars but I give a lot of books three stars and I didn’t like this as much as those ones so it only seemed fair haha.

Enjoyable YA. Loved how the characters helped each other work through the losses in their lives.
