First thing I’ve read by Gertrude Stein and I spent the entire book going like. Oh I see why people hated you. Yeah sure it’s lesbians in early 20th century Paris but jesus christ, epitome of nobody in this book is a good person. Incredibly readable, but I did keep wondering why nobody has punched her yet.

I think my curiosity regarding Gertrude Stein's writing style has now been satisfied.

While I enjoyed sections, I found myself towards the last half either skimming or re-reading passages for details I did care for.

It is definitely a stream of consciousness style novel. The issue with this for me is I get details on what was ate for dinner, the list of the guests, their attire, what the weather was like, who sat where, segments of how we know these people and then when something of interest does occur, we will either get an answer a few pages or chapters later. Maybe not at all.

Ummm… hello I’d still like to know how Constance broke up a marriage!

This book was really interesting to read and quite engaging. Some parts seemed frivolous but those were also the most enjoyable.

ok ngl but gertrude stein was a proto pick me girl for real :// she queered that shit up but stilllllllllllll

picasso is a pee pee head.

also imagine writing your own story under the guise of your bae's autobiography. like it's maybe kind of funny but also I would be pissed. Especially bcos a lot of the time it's 'Alice' implying how inferior she is to Gertrude's genius. nah.

the only reason it's 2 stars instead of one for me bcos it's kind of funny to see how really silly these avant-gardes were lol. also who knew that Mary Borden survived the Titanic. wild.

Anyways lots of big baby boys in this book so if that's your thing (with some brief glimpse of your highness Mina Loy) then give this one a read xoxo
