Set in France during WW2, this historical fiction tells the story of the war from the women’s perspective. As it is stated in the book, it is the men who usually get the credit for fighting wars. However, the women are left behind and must fight their own wars at home. Vianne and Isabelle are sisters who, although very different, each contribute to the war resistance in her own way. The bravery and pain that each of them endured during the horrific evil that occurred during the Nazi’s occupation of France is heartbreaking.

This was my first Kristin Hannah book, and it will certainly not be my last. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style, and this story kept my eyes glued to the pages from start to finish.

This is not my typical preferred genre of book. I heard Dakota and Elle Fanning are playing Vianne and Isabelle which is what convinced me to read this. I loved it. I honestly couldn’t put it down. The story was well written, intriguing, smart, and I just had to know what would happen. The story was so heartbreaking - I cried several times while reading this. I found myself caring about the characters and became invested in their lives. Great read.

This book is not on a par with Kate Atkinson's Life After Life but I liked it much more than the overrated, in my opinion, All The Light We Cannot See. Sure, it isn't great literature but it tugged at my heartstrings and I found several aspects of it very affecting, not the least of which was the insidious tightening of the noose around Jewish necks as well as the all too eager collaborators among the French. This is underrepresented in fiction an nonfiction.

Very slow start, took me three tries in between other books to really get into it. Once I got past the beginning it was a really beautiful book showing strong heroines making brave choices and sacrifices.
