I wanted to love this book but just didn’t. Kit and Diane were best friends in high school, up until Diane told Kit her horrible secret. They went their separate ways after graduation but both became recognized star scientists and ultimately end up at the same lab working with their high school idol, Dr. Severin. Amidst the celebration of both of them getting selected for work on a prestigious grant, something happens that Kit feels she must keep a secret and she and Diane are thrown together again, bound by things they can’t tell others. Suspenseful, with a couple of twists, but I felt like the author never quite dug deep enough on the characters to make their personalities believable.

Bit of a slow start...only became interesting from about 100 pages in. Worth a read though

***3/4
I like how Abbott writes: engaging, even when she takes inspiration from a true crime story as she does for this novel. It's difficult to take sides in this novel; one roots for either character and discovers flaws in both, which I guess makes it all the more interesting. I rate this just shy of the full four stars.

Be sure to Google Marie Robards, after you've finished the novel, and read the Texas Monthly article that will show up high in the results.

I loved this up until like 80% of the way through at which point all these brilliant women seemed to take stupid pills and fall to wanting to hurt each other — or at least the narrator did — which just made it all so infuriating to read.

A note about this book for my ace folks: this is not ace friendly. Diane, one of the protagonists, is described as never having sex, finding sex repulsive and other things that could get a reader to clearly read her as ace. However the narrator is pretty aphobic— constantly questioning how she couldn’t want to have sex, and definitely calling her the villain of the piece. It can be kind of triggering and bothered me a lot while reading. Definitely tread with care — I don’t think it’s necessarily bad, but would warn people about that.

This was probably a 2.5. A suspense book that I was enjoying but I really disliked the final third of the book. Eh..

This thriller didn't live up to expectations writing-wise but I did enjoy the setting of women in science. All of the lab-life backstory with specific protocols and grant positions and competition among colleagues was all very real and engaging. I also appreciated that any of the characters' morally reprehensible acts were described in a nuanced way that allowed me to view both sides of the situations and to really feel torn about wanting all of the truth to be exposed. In the end I found a lot to ponder and I liked the unexpected plot twists.

Oh, man.
I really enjoyed this one, I probably could have read it faster if the holidays hadn't approached.

Diane, Diane, Diane.
You're someone I am interested in talking to.
