In this Wonderland story, we follow our main character, Dinah. She is the daughter of the King of Hearts and will soon be Queen. But she is still trying to get her father's approval and love, even when he reveals a big secret. But Dinah is suspicious of things going on that she is not aware of and she intends to find out before she is Queen.

I don't want to give away too much so that is why the synopsis is so short but quite a lot happens in this story and they would be considered spoilers. I did not love this one but I enjoyed it and thought it was okay. Dinah is a great girl with a good head on her shoulders and seems to only care about her father, even when he pays no attention to her. Her relationship with her childhood friend Wardley is very cute but I think that it could be built on more in the next two books. I love how we get to see some familiar characters from the original Alice story, like Cheshire, who is the King's right hand man and the Mad Hatter, who happens to be Dinah's brother, Charles. The story was entertaining and good but at times I found myself bored because it was dragging. There are lots of secrets in this Wonderland and I was definitely confused for a while on what was going on but I think I may have some of it figured out now. If not, I am hoping the next book will answer my unanswered questions. I am definitely going to continue with the series and I hope that it gets better.

I'm not quite sure how to rate this book I almost DNF it after chapter 2, but I was reading it for a Readathon so I pressed through, and ended up kind of enjoying the story.
I'm curious to see how it all ends.

It's a very dark reimagining of Wonderland with the Queen of Hearts as the main character. Lots of death and mystery, and a father I wouldn't mind seeing impaled on a spike.

I was just so disappointed by this book, it was so meh.

THE PLOT
description
This was probably my main issue. Nothing interesting happened. It was all so cliche, and even the deviations from the original Alice in Wonderland story felt boring & predictable.

ALICE was dumber than this:
description
(Who just randomly eats stuff?? I am still not over this stupidity). I think her name was Dinah or something weird in this book, but she had no unique or interesting qualities whatsoever, making it quite boring.

There was just nothing about this book to make it interesting. I still don't know the character names, so evidently this story won't stay with me long.

MY OVERALL THOUGHTS

I'm sorry, but, BYE!!!!!!!!

Overall Review (spoilers)

I really loved this book, even though there were parts that were a little hard to read or understand at points. It was also refreshing of a read in that it flipped on the tropes on it’s head. Childhood friends turned to lovers? Nope. Rejected Queen is kind? Nope. Long dead mother was a saint? Nope! I appreciated the rejection of main tropes so much in this book.

The main character was not likable, nor was she designed to be which I appreciated. Even when we understand why Dinah acted the way she did, we still can’t fully agree with it. At the time of writing this review, I can say that I have read all three books in this series and I appreciate how Collen Oakes did not deviate from Dinah’s character.

Plot Rating: I give the plot itself a 5/5 stars.

She’ll wear a crown to keep her head

This was unexpectedly entertaining. I am always very interested in the idea of having the story of an antagonist told, but I have learnt to start reading with little to none expectations, especially if it's YA. While Queen of Hearts had moments were I regretted picked it up, for most part it kept my attention and was a nice read; the world building was interesting, and the characters weren't bad, but I ended up feeling just "okay" about it, with no attachment to the characters or the world.

Overall, it didn't disappoint me but it didn't impress me, either. In it's own I don't think it was especially great, but it was a good enough introduction for the rest of the series and it totally caught my interest.

Been a while since I read a fantasy retelling but dear lord this is absolutely one of the best. The mystery, the action, the emotions! It was all so well done. And I can tell the character development is going to be one of my favorite things as the series goes on, its already so clear that the MC is learning and maturing from the clueless, sheltered girl she was.

I really hope romance doesn’t play a huge part in the sequels, I kind of want to see how Dinah will evolve after all this trauma she’s faced in less than a year.

The best thing about this book is that its less than 300 pages, meaning you can binge read it in a day but that does not take away from the excitement of Wonderland.
