3.5 Stars. Well written and full of excitement but it wasn’t unputdownable. I love Syd as a character but found the end slightly unbelievable based on character development to that point.

I did not feel like this was a well written book. It started with a good precept in which rich kids have proxys that take the punishment if their patron, a kid their age, did something wrong. However, the rest of the plot was pretty cliche: the proxy, named Alex has the secret to helping fix his distopian society, but Alex doen't feel like a hero not does he want to be the hero. The character of Alex is believable, even likeable, but the character Knox is a stereotype.
I was disillusioned with the way the story developed, then just seemed to end - like a letter ended because the writer ran out of paper.
It seemed to me that the main purpose of this book was just to present a homosexual boy as a protagonist. Please don't misunderstand, it is not that I have a problem with this character, it just seemed like the establishment of his sexual preference superseded even the plot development.

if you are looking for a book with a political agenda about being gay and not having rights.. this is for you. the whole book reeked of political stuff.. religion, wealth, etc. I couldn't finish it. I wanted a good story to get caught up in. this was not it. The writing was subpar. I am not a hater of other people's rights I just hate getting duped in my reading selection.

Plot was weak. Only 2 characters were likable. I felt like it built up to nothing. Very disappointed.

Proxy was a nice surprise. It wasn't a nice book, though, and it wasn't meant to be. All the characters beside Syd were horrible but somehow still likable. All choices were set to bring hurt one way or another.

And all throughout the book, notions rarely tackled in ya literature, such as debt, responsibility and individuality VS the greater good, were brought up and discussed in various situations. This book doesn't give you answers, for there are no complete answers to inequalities and suffering anyway. But it gives you a great deal of thoughts, and a painful yet fun adventure with three very different protagonists.
