A fantastic primer to Eastern Europe (even if you haven't read Cafe Europa), and, unexpectedly to me, general contemporary European political issues as well.

I read this when visiting my partner's family in Eastern Europe and heard some of the very same topics and arguments in this book framed in nearly identical ways within 15 minutes of reading the essays. Can't beat that for relevant!

Enjoyed this wide-ranging discussion of Eastern (& Central) Europe both past and present. The author has some interesting insights both personal and observational, and nicely describes some of the more worrying trends like Viktor Orban and the drift towards the right in a number of countries. One minor quibble in the book is that she was not quite right in describing the ban of Stolpersteins here in Munich; there was a very vocal minority against them but they are here on private property in plain view in spite of the pushback they received.

These essays led me down so many different paths (other books, movies) and I'm all about that with my reading. I ordered this book when in came out because my knowledge about Eastern Europe is fairly limited.

I generally like Drakulić's writing, but this book is... ehh. Read this review and this review.
