I loved the details in this, and so happy to finally see Chelsie's backstory. I am always a sucker for anything Chinese, so seeing the Chinese dragons and learning the things that happened there all pulled me in. Can't wait for the next book!

Different than the others

The first three books in this series were self contained stories, mostly - there was some resolution to the plot. This one, however, is a full on cliff hanger, and it’s a doozy. Like the others, it ends before 100%, offering a glimpse of the next book.

Third person, multiple POV (including villains)

It's hard to review the second to last book in a series without spoiling the series. So I'm not going to try. I love this series so so much. Go get book one right now and read it. It's my favorite urban fantasy book. And I've read a lot of urban fantasy.

The only complaint about this one is for the fourth book there was a lot of info dumping. I get that it's setting up for the grand finale. And the ending didn't break me like book three.

Favorite dark horse character - Frederick. God I loved his story.

Still fun, but darker

3.5 starts: Didn't love this one as much (it got darker and less fun than the first two), but still good! Some plot points finally got addressed and resolved that'd been dragging through the last few books, so that was nice.

Re-listen Nov 2023
Good times. All the feels

Relisten dec 2021
Book 4 done.
Amzing as always, how could it not be!?

Though I did get another book to listen to so book 5 must wait, but do not worry book 5! I will get to you too.

Recommened.

What are you waiting for?!?!?!?!?!?

FIrst time:

Omg omg omg. First, omg so hard to get a hold of this one. I listened to the last one 2,5 months ago and I have been dyyyyyyying for more.

Especially since we finally understood what happened in China! And got to see Julius free the Fs and Chelsea and I was all mooooore!

And this one begins with the Golden Emperor coming and I was all omg, finally finally finally! But OMG how she was evil. Every time we were getting close to something a Marci chapter came instead. And the Marci chapters were good since she is dead and all 0_0 but I so wanted to see all the threads come together. The Golden Emperor people! The golden Emperor!

And yes yes I wanted to see if Marci managed to come back from the dead too.

Not to mention the world is ending as Algonquin is going koko. And Bob's plans coming together. SO many things going on.

Damn, I can not write a normal review. One night I woke up at 4 am and could not fall back asleep. So I listened to this cos I thought about it always, always! Took me under 4 days and I tried to cram in as much listening time as I could. Because I could not stop.

Also I loved seeing more of Fredrick, he is the coolest butler ever.

SO if you have NOT started this series, what are you waiting for? Oh and listen, cos Vikas Adam is awesome!

Re-listen:

Still the best series!
Omg what happened in China!

Love you Julius

Vikas Adam is the best narrator ever.

You have to listen to this series

I really enjoyed this, Julius is on top form politicking the Dragons and getting hmself involved in all sorts of fun. The plot s fast paced and really moves forward. It's nice to have a plot that's a little less about on the Heartstrikers infighting, I'm a bit bored of Bethesda. Bob's plots are getting more and more complicated. It's really nice to see Chelsie and the Fs backstory and get to know what happened in Chinaand I really liked the new characters.

I wasn't that interested in Marci's story to be honest (I was more interested in
Spoiler Amelia
who was with her than in Marci herself) and swapping POVs each chapter over to her just felt like we were jumping away from the dragons every time it got interesting.

Also the epilogue sticks a cliffhanger on the end which was a bit annoying, it was going to be a bit of a cliffhanger anyway just because the story is so involved now but the epilogue annoyed me.

That's a pretty vague review but there are a lot of twists and turns so it feels like everything is a spoiler.

Still a great book but could've been shorter. I loved the first two books and was disappointed by the third. The fourth book was good but not up to the first books' awesomeness.

If/when I reread I'll skim Marcy's parts because they were way too drawn out. I love world building but something still needs to happen!

My favorites are all side characters! Bob was hardly seen at all and Chelsie needed more time since her romance is central to the plot. Fredrick was great though and
Spoiler Amelia was all levels of awesome!

Huge cliffhanger alert!

Minor rant about ending.
SpoilerTalk about a disappointing reunion. I want talking not just sex! Why would Julius ignore Bob now when he knows Bob's going to die, he needs to talk to him, and oh, the fate of the world is at stake?!

HOW DARE YOU STOP THERE, RACHEL AARON

HOW DARE YOU

Argh, the cliffhangers in this series! No, I'm not really complaining - especially since I know that, unlike a certain tv show featuring a certain pair of monster-hunting brothers, Aaron always delivers on her cliffhangers, and the beginning of book five will no doubt jump right into the action.

BUT SO CRUEL, AARON. SO CRUEL.

Other than that, what is there to say? This is book four in a series that has just gotten stronger with every installment - book one was fun, book two was excellent, book three had me shrieking, and Dragon of a Different Color continues the trend: better, bigger, with even higher stakes and yet more of Aaron's incredible world-building revealed. Everything fits together so perfectly; hints and clues dropped as far back as book one blend seamlessly together into new revelations about the world, the magic, and the characters and their history - not to mention the problems and enemies they face. I can't talk much about the plot without giving spoilers for previous books, but suffice to say that this series about Quetzalcoatl-descended dragons, ridiculously badass mages, cat-shaped death spirits and the nature of humanity and magic continues to be one of my very favourites, and I both can't wait to get my hands on book five, and am dreading it. Because it's supposed to be the last, and I don't ever want this series to end!
