I wish I wish I wish... That the opening was at the end of the story instead. That we did not know what had happened to our protagonist and why he was stuck out at sea - all potential mystery was sucked and drained dry. The prose is beautiful, and is wonderful out loud. I just experienced no joy in this reading experience, personally.

mwoah, ik weet t niet dit boek. Knap geschreven, beklemmend in zijn eenvoud. misschien was ik niet in de stemming voor zoveel treurnis, melancholie. Ben benieuwd of ik er vanavond na de bespreking in de leeskring anders over denk. #boekperweek 6/52

This would be a wonderful companion piece for Forsyth's The Shepherd + Golding's Pincher Martin.
A man alone, at sea, with a job to do, his own life to preserve. The mind wanders, the impossible mixes with and becomes possible; thoughts feel physical before dripping away into shadows and reflections.

Een soort proza in poëzievorm? Hele minimalistische literatuur is dit. De hele korte zinnetjes in dit boek en vooral de blanco's tussen de paar zinnetjes zijn met kracht beladen. Suggestieve kracht dan wel, want heel veel moet je hier proberen raden in dit verhaal. De man die in zijn kajak getroffen wordt door een bliksemschicht en dan ontwaakt uit zijn shock: hij weet niets meer, ook niet wie hij zelf is. Flarden van herinneringen komen mondjesmaat terug naar boven. Als lezer kom je slechts enkele kleine feiten te weten: de man had de as mee van zijn overleden vader; zijn zwangere vrouw zoekt hem op het vasteland. Hij drijft op een zee van hallucinaties, onderbroken door korte momenten van bewust besef van zijn eigen lichaam. Of hij het redt, laat de auteur achterwege, en dat zorgt op het einde voor een soort onbevredigend gevoel. Na elke spannende thriller wil je weten hoe het nu afloopt. Hier heb je dus het raden naar... Het hoort bij de poëzie van dit boekje, dat je zelf het verhaal moet meedenken, meevoelen. De stijl van het verhaal is bijna poëzie. Het verhaal zorgt voor een voortdurend beklemmend gevoel, en toch is er ook iets van schoonheid in. Vreemd boekje, dat je eigenlijk een paar keer moet herlezen.

Gedichten zijn gewoon niet echt mijn ding. Het zal heel knap zijn, maar Hemingways the old man and the sea deed het beter voor mij. Dit voelde te gekunsteld.
Soms was het echt heel mooi, echt waar, vooral als er gehint werd naar die vrouw en dat kind, en als er opeens prachtige kleuren verschenen, maar het zal me niet bij blijven, ook omdat ik het gewoon vaak niet kon volgen wat er nou exact gebeurde.
