A deeply humanizing and important depiction of the migrant experience. Every person, every “estadounidense” should read this story. I love Lydia, and her story of motherly heroism is unfathomable and also deeply believable. Completely engrossing, heart wrenching, and reverent.

This was extraordinary, heart wrenching, sometimes hard to read but always hard to put down. The personal story of a group of immigrants, with a mother and young son as the two central characters. Everyone is running from something but more importantly running toward a dream of a better, safer, more human existence in el norte. This is a story not to be forgotten as you watch and we struggle with immigration.

It's been a long time since I stayed up well past my bedtime to keep reading.  This heartbreaking account of desperation brings home a guttural sense of things I can never fully understand as I read here in my privilege. I hope those who read it can find compassion in their hearts for the reality of the migrant experience.

This book was extremely powerful! It caused me to reflect on my own privileges in life and has increased my empathy towards others. It was full of injustice and struggle and heartbreak, while also being incredibly hopeful! The characters are so strong and brave and are a reflection of so many people’s untold stories.
