I began reading this before my trip to Barcelona. When I finally arrived at la Catedral del Mar a few weeks later, it was an emotional moment, like meeting an old friend. Seeing this place in person that I had been reading about, to feel like I was standing in the story, was incredibly special. I returned to the church each day of my visit there, perhaps seeking (and finding) the same things Arnau found there in the story.

I took with me many pictures, that I referred to while finishing the book, amazed at the specific details from the 1300s that still remain. Leaving this story feels like I’m leaving a piece of me in the church…but I know the Virgin of the Sea will take good care of it.
