Heathcliff: I love you in that gothic, eternal, dig-up-your-corpse-and-snuggle-it kind of way.

This book is complex - and I think once I am more familiar with the classics genre, and more used to reading this type of prose, I will enjoy re-reading this and analyzing the themes of the story more thoroughly. But even with these barriers - I still enjoyed this tale.

Sure there are romantic elements, but I think where this book really shines is as a tragedy. The complex relationship between love, cruelty, identify, and grief are explored within the relationships in this book - and while I am a 21st century gal who is spoiled by modern-romance, I still enjoyed the complex romance, lyrical prose (especially when the character is professing their love), and deeply complex and flawed characters within this story.

I am not a Heathcliff stan (am I really meant to be?) like I see some other girlies are - but I have a deep appreciation for the complexity of love, grief, and passion that is explored in his relationship with Catherine.

Okay so Wuthering Heights has been quite a journey for me. What an absolute gem of a classic! While being immersed in the waves of tumult in the novel, I realised why a novel written back in the mid 1800s is still loved so much and re-read by bookworms. 

The author weaved characters with details, drew relationships amongst them (which were getting complicated over time) and yet it was intriguing. At first, on the introduction of Heathcliff and how Catherine realised she was in love with him, made me contemplate that they were getting along. But as the halfway neared, my perspective towards Heathcliff began to change. On the contrary, I started respecting how Edgar Linton was so humble and mature in dealing with the atrocities he had to face. Also, Mrs. Ellen Dean is a character who neatly layers up the history of Wuthering Heights, Thrushcross Grange & Gimmerton.
I loved the way she kept her calm during the most unnerved situations. As the plot proceeds, Heathcliff began to sabotage the relationships of all those whom he was supposed to love and nurture too dearly. He grew cold blooded and immensely reckless. There were intertwined relationships amongst most of the characters which I found difficult to maintain pace with at the beginning but gradually I overcame. Whether the toxic Heathcliff continues being ruthless or transitions himself to being humble, is what drove me to the end.

To quote Catherine's words, "He shall never know how I love him: and that, not because he's handsome, but because he's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same." This novel boils down to the feelings of love, hate, revenge and fury and the repercussions that follow. Love - it breaks, burns and damages that what could've been beautiful. Would it ever heal? 
P.S. : I wish this wasn't just the only novel written by Emily Brontë. 🥺

My thoughts:

1. I really liked the cyclic nature of the story. The interconnection between the beginning of the novel and its ending was the aspect that I did enjoy.
2. Two main themes of the novel - love and revenge - were beautifully exhibited, portrayed through the characters´ actions (external method, which I like), developed and resolved in a very pleasant manner.
3. The only thing that I disliked was the character of Nelly. And because she was also the narrator of the story - framed narrative - I was not able to get over her selfish, manipulative and subjective narration.
