Despite the horrifying title, The Museum of Unconditional Surrender is not as doom laden as it may seem. A series of vignettes about the experience of being an exile, many are simple observations of everyday humanity, with war and refuge as a back up to a more human subplot. Ugrešić was born in the former Yugoslavia, and left the country in 1993 having taken an anti war stance as the country fought for independence. Despite this potential for bitterness, she describes her homeland with a mix of nostalgia and regret, and her following life as one of personal exploration, but never quite belonging. In places the stories are beautiful, in places they are tiny snapsnots of a larger moment, and in the odd place they go a bit bonkers and I wasn't really sure about them (the Angel story).

I'm still not really sure about the walrus - the seemingly random items in his stomach reflect the seemingly random mix of stories that make up a life? Drawn together by wobbly lines and history? Whatever, I enjoyed this far more than I expected to, and am torn between a 3 and a 4.

De samenhang die aan het begin wordt beloofd is, naar mijn idee, samenhangloosheid. Een ietwat onbevredigende conclusie.

Niet meeslepend, niet beklemmend, eerder onthecht en radeloos. Deed me denken aan Tuinfeest van Konrad in zijn meanderende vignettes, of aan een Ernaux die niet probeert exact of bondig te zijn.

I loved this book. It's weird and lovely, written almost as a collection of novellas and a smattering of thoughts. It made me want to know more about the very recent history of the former Soviet states. A beautiful, odd primer on the area and its people

Дубравка Уґрешич боролась зі мною з кожної сторінки своєї книжки і, врешті, перемогла.
У мене був великий кредит довіри до авторки, про неї дуже високо відзивається одна з моїх хорватських подруг, і, ну, з тих щось 5-ти балканських книг, що я прочитала, в мене не було поки що негативного досвіду. Прикро, що з Музеєм безумовної капітуляції так не вийшло.

Від ліричної героїні так і віє цим духом, знаєте, харошої емігрантки, з яким багато хто з нас вже встиг стикнутись. От ці всі пагані, а одна я хароша. І той момент, де вона насміхається зі своєї подруги, що лишилась вдома (я собі так нагедканонила, що то у Задарі, не питайте) і не вилазить з ванної кімнати, бо то найбезпечніше місце у квартирі? Весело читати подібні рядки, поки ти сама сидиш, бляха, у ванній, бо літає блєдіна, і ванна то найбезпечніше місце у квартирі.

І це вже не кажучи про постійну русню, яка, разом із Берліном, не заслужила осуду оілричної авторки, в той час як бувкально кожен інший персонаж був вправно осудженим.

Загалом, певно, я читала цю книгу не в той час. Років два тому, впевнена, вона би мені по-іншому сприймалась би. Але без власного балканського досвіду я би не взялась її читати.

Але все ж хочу ще щось прочитати від пані Уґрешич, все ж не дарма моя подруга так високо про неї говоре.
