Meeting your soulmate again with no memory of both your past...is the kind of drama I'd welcome anytime.

This girl, Margaret Honeywell, has a monstrous emotional control, like I was there bawling my eyes out while his long past lover kept telling her he isn't his guy...and this girl–with lung illness, seemingly an invalid, just lost all her family, and left with an evil bastard to marry–JUST STANDS THERE!

like girl, is your favorite activity crying inside? I'm seriously scared to death of your lifeline. You don't deserve this pain!

But, emotional outburst aside, this book did the plot justice. It was vanilla, fluffy romance with delicious drama with a swoon-worthy hero and a lovely heroine.

This reads like a modern version of a classic 19th century novel. The suspense, the drama, the love story...it's all absolutely thrilling. The romance between Maggie and Nicholas is just heart-stopping and I loved how Matthews leaned all the way into the adventure and the drama with this one. The writing is lovely as always and I adored all the historical details, especially the fashion. This was fun, moving, and pure excellence from start to finish.

I enjoyed Maggie’s stubborn and spitfire character who wasn’t afraid to fight for what she wanted and for those she loved. Her grace and forgiveness towards St Clare was admirable. I didn’t feel like I completely connected with St Clare but I mostly liked his character nonetheless. He was a good opponent to Fred and was realistically flawed.

Wholesome regency romance with a touch of swashbuckling. Premise: rich girl loves poor boy, poor boy driven away by rich love rival, poor boy returns years later as a gentleman but refuses to admit his identity…

One of those books where you know how it ends before you pick it up, but sometimes that’s just what you need ;)

I liked this a lot! Full of adventure and mystery and romance. Nicholas and Maggie were really cute, but I didn’t love this one as much as book one.

3.5 stars, actually

This is billed as a tale of revenge....but I would say its more like a clean historical romance where the hero gets a second chance to win his woman.

Lord St. Clare comes back to London and encounters Maggie Honeywell. She's immediately drawn to him despite having refused countless suitors before him based on her undying love for a childhood love who was driven away from her father's estate by a rival.

She's sure he's her lover returned, but he doesn't acknowledge her, although he does pay her every kind of attention. Meanwhile, Maggie's busy fending off the bullying advances of the rival, and St. Clare's trying to keep his identity secret.

There's some shenanigans involving low class taverns, pretend highwaymen, duels, and nefarious cousins, but the states felt somewhat low and Maggie's "reckless" decisions a bit....stupid at times?

Anyway, it was a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to spend much more time in this world. I like steamier stories for one, and two, the characters just too often made decisions based on plot advantage rather than feeling organic to their characters.

Quotes: “Not then. After that. At the theater and today and…” Maggie faltered. “If I’m a stranger to you, then…why did you kiss me?” “If you must ask me that, I can only assume that you’ve vastly underrated your charms.” St. Clare looked down at her with studied nonchalance.

“Perhaps he should have warned his grandfather that Maggie had been raised by the biggest bully in the West Country? Squire Honeywell’s temper had all but inoculated his daughter. When it came to overbearing men, she was accustomed to giving as good as she got.”

Another great read by Mimi Matthews. I loved Maggie’s spunk and St. Clare’s absolute love for her come what may in all of the mystery.  He just couldn’t stay away from her and the romance was such a sweet story. Lots of adventure and obnoxious villains made for a great book.
