Tough to get through, but such a great ending! She left me in suspense the whole time!

I really enjoyed this book and its descriptions of life onboard a ship.

The brides were brought to life for me, but a few parts weren’t so enjoyable.

Poor Maudie, being dragged onto a boat in her last years. I felt that it was an awful side to the story, trying to imagine how to keep her healthy and quiet for all that time.

I would like to have known what happened to each of the main four girls, given we spent so much time getting to know them. And I would also like to know more about how Frances put her past behind her. Was her history ever disclosed after she left the ship?

For the most part I really appreciated the stories that were told.

This was the first of Moyes' historical novels that I read. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about this slice of history - Australian war brides on their journey to England. Very enjoyable!

The story is told as a flashback. It starts in India where they find a boat that was the boat that carried brides after world war ii. The boat started in Australia and carried women with married English servicemen. On the boat are several women. They are all lovely girls with the exception of one. Then you find out that Francis who was a nurse in the war was actually a prostitute for a little while. Being the 50s reaction to this is quite negative. But they allow her to say I'm bored and she is the narrator of the story. She marries a man she met on board and lives happy life.

This one was a little tough to get through but I enjoyed it overall - especially the ending.
