This is the last of Amanda Quick's series of historical romances with one-word-title that I loyally devoured in the past 6 months, but it's one of her earliest books under this pseudonym and I can't quite like it. This must be the only AQ book that has no puzzle, mystery, or murder in it. It's very heavy on the domestic relationship between the heroine Emily and the hero Simon. They got married very early in the book, Simon acted like an asshole the entire time, obsessed with control and revenge while wanting to fuck her every time he broke her heart. Emily made you roll your eyes every second paragraph with her epic poetic transcendent language and her worship of Simon. The book's biggest plot seems to be one of Emily unknowingly working thru Simon's plan for revenge, slowly changing Simon's heart until he realised that he loved her too, from the start. Emily may be one of AQ's quirkiest heroines, and she's the best redeeming factor in this book, especially in those later chapters, when it is revealed that she's not as romantic as she chose to be. In the end, it's still a cosy romance with happy endings.

This was enjoyable enough. I didn't particularly warm up to the heroine. She was too naïve and romanticize everything to the death. There was one particular scene where the hero wanted to shake her, heck, I wanted to shake her too. She annoyed me too much. The hero was typical Ms. Quick's hero. It was an average read.

A fun little story. I grew tired of the words "metaphysical" and "transcendent" rather quickly though.

Amanda Quick is a comfort read of mine because she has an equation that I like quite a bit. She has a naive yet smart heroine who dumbfounds the cynical hero. They have adventures where the heroine proves her bravery and loyalty, and the hero realizes that he's been in love with her all along. He is determined to protect her in an overbearing but adorable manner. Happily ever after.

Ahaha so Emily is exactly who I think of when I think of Quick's classic heroine. She's smart with money and has been saving her gross dad and brothers from the poor house due to her investments. Simon wants revenge on her family, so he decides to marry her to force the male Faringdons into bankruptcy. Little does he know that she wants to be his staunchest ally and protector. Also Emily's fashion sense is hilarious. I was cracking up as Quick described it. Simon isn't my favorite hero and I'd certainly not want to date him myself, but he's met his match with Emily. He does save her from her terrible family, and Emily just flat out ignores any potential power imbalance between them by doing whatever she wants anyway. Definitely a comfort read that I shall revisit.
