1.5 stars. i was just looking for a fun time crime thriller, similar to karin slaughter’s Grant County series, so i just grabbed this audiobook from the library on a whim. and what did i just read? like i’m shocked at some of the stuff that was in here. the plot was honestly so random and convoluted, truly just a bunch of stuff thrown together. and as this is a middle book in a series (as in same characters, but the mysteries are standalones) these characters have well established relationships. so imagine my shock, surprise, and horror when it’s revealed that one of the main characters sexually assaulted the main character in a previous book. AND he comes back in this one, and everyone is basically an assault apologist. even her husband was all buddy buddy with him. i’m sorry but it was just such a terrible message, and it truly made me seethe. seeing this character just come back, and have everyone 100% excuse and forgive him?! why would an author ever do that to such an established character in their series. anyway, there were a couple other offensive things in here too. if you’re looking for crime books, i suggest Karin Slaughter.

I'd read the rest of this series for sure.

I got 140 pages into this book, attempting it for the second time before I gave up. I have read all of the Kay Scarpetta books, but am giving up on this one for now.

I've been re-reading the series beginning with Trace and some of these books I don't remember. I think I was so disappointed in Predator and Book of the Dead that I stopped reading.

I enjoyed this one much better than Predator and Book of the Dead as the major characters begin at a level of less misery than previously and end at something one could call happy. At least contented.

The denouement of the case seems far less convoluted--or told in a more comprehensible way--at least because the reader can put some of it together themselves.

I think I'm really reading these for the interpersonal relationships. If someone would just write an article tracing how those evolve through the series, I wouldn't have to read every book.

I also find it amusing how many businesses Lucy just abandons. What happens to them? Does she sell off parts of them? Does she bring her employees with her to the new one?

What happened to Lucy's health issue?

I stopped reading the series after the switch to third-person present tense - it just lost something vital at that point. I finally decided to try it as audiobooks to see if it would work better in a different medium, and it did... I just don't like the characters any more. This, and the previous book (Book of the Dead) are just so bleak and yet strangely lifeless. I don't care about the characters any more. I didn't even care if I finished the book.

I think I'll return to just reading the first half of the series and pretending it stops there.
