After watching the first 2 episodes of the new Shadowhunters- tv series, I really felt like I should continue reading the books. The first book was just okay, but this one was much faster in pace and more entertaining. In my opinion, at least.

I wasn't excited about this series before, but I sure am now.

i'm actually mad about the ending. as bad as it may sound, i really don't care about clary's mother or her waking up or even her survival. i'm sorry but her character is so underdeveloped. but that's not even what the problem is with this godforsaken book. IN THIS BOOK, I REPEAT, IN THIS BOOK, THE TWO MAIN LOVE INTERESTS ARE SIBLINGS!!!! SIBLINGS! WHY IS THIS EVEN A PLOT CHOICE FROM CLARE, I DON'T UNDERSTAND. it's so fucked up, you can't just skim over the fact that they were dating or whatever tf, and then are anounced as siblings and are desperately trying to keep their pants on around each other. i just don't get why she didn't leave this "obstacle" out, there are other ways to forbid your characters from love than a SIBLINGS PLOT TWIST. and the blurb?!?!?! THIS IS NOT FORBIDDEN LOVE THIS IS INCEST CORE.

however..... HOWEVER, i will say that clare's world building and some character descriptions make it very hard not to get attached to the world. but in the end, all i have to say is, fuck this book.

City of Ashes is the second book in the Mortal Instruments series. My actual rating is 3.25/5

Clary is still overwhelmed with the changes in her life, which includes finding out she's a Shadowhunter. So when different kinds of Downworlders are found slaughtered and drained of blood, naturally, the Shadowhunters investigate. Although Clary and Jace are still battling with their feelings for each other - somehow throwing poor Simon into the middle of that - they are bound by the knowledge that if Valentine completes his evil masterminded plan, the world as they know it will be reduced to ashes.

I actually enjoyed this book more than the first one, thankfully, as I found the first book of this series pretty lacking in any truly hardcore fantastical action. The author establishes the world of Downworlders further in this book which was enjoyable to read and the tone of the book is a lot more serious, rather than a lot of plot fodder.

Clary is your typical teenage angst paranormal heroine, pining over a boy she can never be with, whilst learning to battle demons. She comes into her own more in this book and actually begins to expand on her skills that were lacking in the first book yet consistently implied of. I am actually pretty excited - also slightly apprehensive - of how the author develops her further.

Although the book is still very Jace orientated. There is progress within all of the characters - the protagonists and the supporters - which is congenial to read. Jace and Simon become more amusing, Isabelle's frozen and fierce personality is slightly melted, and Alec is beginning to accept himself. Their individual journeys are intriguing.

Even though Clary is your classic unreliable narrator, the story is authentic. It is extremely emotional and tense, with lots of agonising internal battles - as well as the odd external one. I sincerely hope the rest of the series continues to improve.

A book and a half about a boy trying desperately to force a girl to love him, to change into the girl he wants her to be, and throwing fits when she doesn't do it.  And he's the 'nice' guy.  Can we... can we just stop telling young women that this is romantic?  That stubbornly ignoring 'no' isn't loyalty?  That insisting you be who they want you to be isn't love? That the pain of your rejection isn't a horrid wrong you have to right?  That growing and becoming as a person and loving whoever you love isn't a betrayal?  I'm so tired.

Alright this book was really... weird.
So I was totally yay Simon in the previous book, but in this book the relationship between Simon and Clary was just cringy. He seemed to be holding onto to something that just wasn’t there and she was obviously interested in Jace (wut). I mean the scene... with the kiss... YOU KNOW WHICH ONE! Like why was I rooting for that!? THEY ARE SIBLINGS. I disgust myself 😂.
Simon turning into a vampire was super wtf and unnecessary. I facepalmed that rebirth scene. Why?
A couple cool things though. Jace’s newly discovered “I can drop from extreme heights and not die” skill. Like yeah, that’s dope. Clary can create those sigil thingers, yeah that’s totally awesome.
I’m still interested in continuing with the series so obviously it wasn’t a total lost cause of a book 🤷🏼‍♀️
