This was such a good read! Cody is a survivor; he’s living a hellish life, isolated and lonely, he’s a carer for his father who hates him and is abusive, his half-brother who is a terrible human being and his mother who is completely checked out. Lonely and depressed his only outlet is his favourite MMORPG Black Oasis and the monster living under his bed…

Nor is a sleep demon, but instead of fuelling Cody’s nightmares, he’s realised that Cody is living them during the day. Nor grows into Cody’s protector and more, as the attraction between them grows. If you’ve read any of Lily Mayne and Nik Knight’s monster romances already you’ll be familiar with their wonderful monster characters - with their unique way of seeing the world and their ✨unusual✨ anatomy!

Cody is at rock bottom in his life and watching Nor pick him up and protect him was just so heartwarming - especially as the whole thing starts with Cody holding hands with the monster under his bed 🥹 Ummmm so cute!! The dream realm where Nor lives was so interesting - gave me Zelda BotW blood moon night vibes! And of course Crumbs the fearsome Pomeranian was the best 💕

Read Whispers in the Dark for:
✨ Human x Sleep Demon
✨ Flirting with the monster under the bed
✨ Monster anatomy
✨ Hurt/Comfort
✨ First times
✨ Touch him and die
✨ Escaping an abusive household
✨ What do humans even eat?
✨ A Pomeranian terrifies even the demons

Cody and Nor… gah! So damn sweet. Nor is just the most lovable cinnamon roll protector. And Cody just wants not to be treated like crap by his family. And this is definitely not your childhood version of monsters under the bed!

There are some dark themes in this story, but Cody and Nor are just the best. Nor reminds me of a mix of Seraph and Greid, and his buddy Lur sorta like a surly Orlith (from other Lily Mayne books).

Now, this year (not even that long ago) I fell in love with Lily Mayne when I finally read her famous Monstrous series. I also fell in love with Nik Knight when I read their newest release, Passing Through Purgatory. So, naturally, I had to read their co-written monster romance books as well. And it did not disappoint.

I fell in love with Cody and Nor, guys. I have such deep, warm affection for Cody, which is born from an intimate understanding of what he's going through with his family. Nor, on the other hand, I just adore with all my heart because he's just so dang sweet and loveable. (I got so many Seraph vibes from him, truly.) While, on paper, this story should be strange and unrealistic... The way the story is told makes it seem very understandable why these two gravitate towards each other. I definitely could see how Cody ends up seeing this "monster" under his bed as a sort of safe haven. Because he's so deeply lonely and miserable in his life, Nor provides companionship, makes him less alone and maybe even a little safer. Their relationship is so achingly beautiful and deep and wonderful and I loved every second of it.

Cody's family, though... Yikes. I hated his (half-)brother Brad, and his father. I was sort of indifferent towards his mother, though I also kind of dislike her at the same time. We didn't see much of her, which was probably the point. But his father and Brad just... No. Hate them both.

I also have to give major props to the writing, which is just stunning. Truly. Deeply atmospheric, and so, so beautiful that I collected a few quotes just to show you what I mean.

In short, highly recommend this book and will dive into the next one right away.

Quotes:

And the entire time, the atmosphere would breathe and hum around me until my skin prickled and my hairs stood on end. Like the air was thick with static, heavy with the expectancy for something that never came.

----------

When my brain finally calmed and sleep inevitably claimed me, Nor’s fingers were still wrapped around mine. I never pulled away. Neither did he.

----------

And in his hovel, deep in the ground where only we could find it, our love glowed like the jewels in our treasure chest.

Damn I loved this book. Something about an otherworldly character that has no idea how humans act and think, navigating our world and complex emotions just gets to me.

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I thought I would. I really enjoyed Lily Mayne’s monstrous series and I could definitely see her influence on the monster aspects of this story. However I thought that Cody’s family struggles got way too much page time. And the connection to the Black Oasis game was never really explored. I still think this series has some potential and I would read a sequel about Lau if it was written.
