Sci-fi isn’t my normal genre, but I’d thought I’d give it a go. I was set to give this 3 stars until the ending because it was all decently entertaining and I was intrigued to figure out what was going on. BUT I’m not convinced the ending made any sense

Emily Henry is that Bish. This is not her usual fare, but excellent nonetheless. It has lush levels. This will definitely land in my top five of twenty twenty-two...

Not sure I liked this one but it also made me cry for a minute near the end? Could've been life stuff, or even PMS, that helped to make that happen but also I do just cry super easy. Didn't mean I liked it. But I didn't hate it.

This is why I don't review a day later. I got nothing.

When I started this book I thought that it had the potential to be a new favorite--I really, really loved the first 60 or so pages. But while I still really enjoyed this book (I'm giving it 4 stars, after all), the rest of it just didn't live up to the first bit. I think I just wanted MORE to be done. I especially wanted more character moments, because these characters were SO spectacular. This group of characters is 100% why my rating is so high. Honestly, I think I would have preferred if the supernatural element had taken a bit of a back seat to just these characters just having conversations, because they were so likable and funny. The beginning of the book was like that, but then it shifted to be more sci-fi.

I just wanted more of them interacting to really FEEL their connection. Because I already DID feel that connection, I just think I would have enjoyed it going that extra little bit to help me to really remember this friend group for a long time after I finished the book. Am I making sense? Like, Franny and Remy have kinda a thing going on, but I didn't feel it to the extent that I could have. Same, I felt like, with Arthur and Nick.

Anyway, I still really enjoyed this, and I'm definitely interested in checking out Emily Henry's other books!

Here's a kinda random quote from the book I also really liked!
"...there was a pining feeling low in my stomach, like I got when Remy said I love you, like I was already missing this moment even as it was happening."

Everyone in small town Splendor, Ohio was affected by the local steel mill exploding. Like many others Franny wasn't hurt in the accident but her eldest brother was and five years later there's nothing she can do but stand by whilst her brother lies in a coma. In the wake of the explosion Franny found solace in her friends who's experiences mirrored her own. In their free time they investigate local ghost stories and legends- filming their experiences and putting them on YouTube for their small following. There's not much to report until one night they're in the wrong place at the wrong time (or the right place and the right time) and they all witness a bright light and massive crash from space. Afterwards Franny and her friends start to experience strange energy bursts and notice odd things around town. But Franny and her friends aren't the only ones with an eye on the aftermath of the crash.

Science fiction isn't really my thing but I did enjoy the combination of back/forward flash depicting the explosion and their lives now. The relationships were well done and I liked Franny as a main character. A good choice for someone who likes science fiction, a cast of characters, and a tragic past.

Likes: Look at me, reading a book right after it comes out. Usually my preorders sit on the shelf for a year before I get around to reading them. This one was too tempting to leave on the shelf.

When The Sky Fell on Splendor is a fast-paced story about six teens who became friends after a steel mill explosion. This could be a straightforward novel about grief and friendship, but it’s not. The author puts a creative spin on typical teen book topics. While the teens are filming a video one night, something falls from the sky. Do the bright light and the strange creature who steps out of it have something to do with the mill explosion?

If you like plot-driven books, this is a novel for you. The plot gets moving early and doesn’t let up. The twists kept me awake for most of the night. I couldn’t put the book down until I discovered what the alien wants. I didn’t expect the book to end the way it does, but I was satisfied with the conclusion. It wraps everything up nicely.

Can we have more teen friendships in books, please? I want to read about friend groups. I like the banter and the quirky-yet-flawed characters in this one.

Dislikes: Too many characters. Since the plot moves fast, we only get superficial details about some of them. I think those characters could have been deleted without hurting the story.

A few of the plot events are too stereotypical sci-fi/horror for me. You’ve got your creepy fog, your sinister FBI people, the weird neighbor, some comic-book-style superpowers. I’ve seen all of this stuff a million times before.

The Bottom Line: I didn’t love it as much as I thought I would, but it definitely entertained me and kept me guessing. If you like science fiction, I recommend it.

Do you like opinions, giveaways, and bookish nonsense?
I have a blog for that.

Pros:

- Ohio!!!
- big group of friends
- dog!!!! (Who is the BEST girl)
- aliens???
- Teens on bikes!
- reminds me a bit of the last arc or so of TAZ Amnesty, if you take out the cryptids and world-gates.

Cons:
- slow build
- assumptions = truth, obviously
- ending was...eh.

Not a favorite, I expected the sci-fi to be a lot harder than it was. but I still enjoyed it and would probably recommend it as a book worth reading because I haven’t really come across a lot else like it.

*spoilers*

I was really pumped finding a new novel set in Ohio, especially because potential aliens?!?! The problem is, with aliens I either want aliens or a very elaborate hoax. The resolution to this was… very wishy-washy on that point. It’s not aliens, but it’s not NOT aliens. Ugh. That makes me sound like Arthur, lol.
