3.5. This didn't quite work for me as a short story. Characters are introduced rapid fire in the latter half of the story and you're not really given enough time to care about or even empathize with them. And while Susan is a through line, Katharine shows up so completely changed and with so many alien experiences that she doesn't feel like one at all. The plot was interesting but it's hard to get invested in a plot when you don't care about the characters, and I feel like there was potential to care about them but because their appearances were so abbreviated, it wasn't easy.

My love of the sci-fi horror genre most often revolves around a sense of dreaded discovery, something fantastically accomplished by Mira Grants 2017 release, Into the Drowning Deep. However, in her novella Square³, the thrill of the hunt is distinctly lacking. Instead, the narrative is cleanly cut into exciting events and subsequent exposition. Its opening chapters are perhaps the clearest example of this. A harrowing event that sees the opening of monster filled rifts separating our two main characters, sisters, and the following time jump that reveals one of them is now an expert in a new rift studying field and can provide the necessary information to settle us into the story. All this to say, Mira Grant is a fantastic genre writer and, even when the novella too often provides answers over questions, I still found Square³ to be a fantastic sliver of a greater world.

Audiobook provided to me for free by NetGalley!
I was thrilled to be approved for this book-Seanan McGuire (writing as Mira Grant here) is one of my favorite authors and the concept was intriguing. It’s kind of X-Men taking place in a world very similar to Pacific Rim- rifts open and monsters enter our world and super powered children result from that. Sisters Susan and Kitty end up on separate sides of a rift, and we follow them (mainly Susan as she becomes a government scientist) as they survive and try to reunite. This is a quick 3 hour audiobook with a great narrator and excellent pace. I do think it could be setting up for a longer series, but I’m happy enough with it as a standalone.
