This book is not for the faint of heart. This is intense from page one and doesn’t slow down. I promise this is I’ll take you on a ride that you are gasping for air!!

AUDIOBOOK: A Caller’s Game
AUTHOR: JD Barker
NARRATORS
Mia Barron & Brian Hutchison
SOURCE: I actually found this on @netgalley when their audios were synthesized. So I waited until I found it on @librofm
LENGTH: 12 Hrs and 16 min at 1X speed
PUBLISHER: @recordedbooks
PUBLISHED: March 2021

This book is described as Die Hard crossed with a Talk Show. Well it’s all that for sure and a bag of chips!! I would love all the thriller/horror lovers to listen or read this book. It’s intense and keeps you completely engaged from page one. Read the trigger warnings in this book - there are quite a few potential triggers.

This is where the terror begins, “I’m going to offer you a choice.”

That’s a live phone in on Jordan Briggs’ radio talk show. She has built herself a spot on the top of the recording world. Well as we know with all good books - she has a past! And someone knows.

As the world outside her recording studio is literally exploding, here enters the cop, Officer Cole Hundley.

The thing we don’t know is how deadly this game is going to get and who the hell is calling in to the talk show. . .

Its the Caller’s Game and boy oh boy it’s a game that should have never been played over the radio!

This is a fast paced action thriller that ramps up the action and explosions as the book progresses. I listened to the audio book and the narrators were fantastic. I felt like I was listening to a movie. My biggest critique is that I needed to suspend my belief that any of this could happen.

The pace of the book is fast. I found it very entertaining and couldn't put it down. You just keep reading because you want to know how it ends. I found it all a bit unrealistic, but it's fiction after all so I don't mind. I liked that the detective wasn't a divorced man with an alcohol problem, which was a refreshing change. I highly recommend it because it was genuinely thrilling—I can't say it enough. By the way, if you're into explosions, this is definitely THE book for you.

A Caller's Game by J.D. Barker

I came into A Caller's Game knowing that there would be explosions (an understatement, if there ever was one). The book has been compared to Die Hard and I'll never read or watch a Die Hard book or movie but I loved Barker's She Has a Broken Thing Where Her Heart Should Be and the characters that he creates. He does know how to create both characters that I really like and characters have me ranting at the book.

In the category of characters that I despised we have Jordan Briggs, a wealthy, controversial talk radio host, willing to skewer and slay any and everybody, regardless of consequences. In fact, in her past are dead and living victims of one of her talk radio pranks that went very, very wrong and now one such person is on the line, giving Jordan deadly choices, choices that always result in death. Think "eye for an eye" with massive collateral damage.

In the category of characters that I like, we have Detective Cole, recently knocked down to traffic police for an offence that we will discover later. Cole, along with a few other characters, is the reason I enjoyed the book. I can only take so much death and devastation but it helps when I have someone that we get to "know", that I'm rooting for, along with all the nameless potential victims of the destruction to come.

In Barker's collaboration with James Patterson, The Coast-to-Coast Murders, I lamented the extremely short chapters. With this book, we have long, meaty chapters and that's something I appreciate. Characters are my favorite thing about books and I'm glad we had some "good" characters, amongst all the explosions.

Publication February 22th 2021

Thank you to J.D. Barker, Hampton Creek Press, and NetGalley for this ARC.
