This was good! I feel like amnesia plotlines are hard to pull off nowadays bc they've kind of become cliche, but this one was really nice. I also find that I enjoy the storylines where Laurence and Temeraire are apart for a time, it reminds me that I love both of them as individual characters and also as a duo.

I feel like this whole series is just us furiously battling with our selves over being on Napoleon's side solely for his treatment of dragons ;aklsdjfl;skjdf. Seriously tho, fuck the British. I feel like Naomi Novik is a master class in nuance.

Forever crying about Tharkay and Laurence actually 😭😭😭
SEEING HIM SPARKED HIS MEMORIES COMING BACK ARE YOU KIDDING ME 😩😩😩

I never love an amnesia plot, and this one just seemed to be an excuse for Laurence to retread the same mini-personality crisis he’d already gotten past by the second book. And Laurence and Temeraire spent the first third of the book apart, which isn’t my favorite either.
But there were some really good parts, all the same!

Easily the most enjoyable of the series for a while, because it didn't feel like a long journey with an interesting backdrop where nothing actually happened, but definitely still lacking in places. An amnesia plotline felt a little lazy to be honest, although it was nice to be reminded of some of the earlier parts of the series as a result and to see the level of character development that had taken place.
I'm glad I've stuck with the series this long because Simon Vance is an excellent narrator and they are good fun, especially as someone who loves history and fantasy, but I'm not sure I could completely recommend them unless it's to someone else who wants fantasy background noise for other tasks.
