2.5 stars WTH did I just read? Seriously. I didn't think a day would come I will write a negative review for a Lanyon book, but here it is. First of all, I expected this to be a mystery in a real Lanyon fashion and what I got was an action movie (?), which played a significant part in my disappointment. Had this been an enjoyable read I would have rated it highly despite my expectations. But since it was not, my unfulfilled expectations only added to the frustration. The only mercy is that it was short and that the writing flowed. xqu_LF47_gif_noredirect The two sex scenes in the book were frustrating.
SpoilerFirst one because there was such a lack of communication between the MCs - one was melted into an emotional puddle while the other was behaving like a stranger and I felt almost sick reading it. The second was was a quick make out session in an abandoned mine shaft - a musty, smelly, almost-coming-down-on-their-heads mine shaft - after they have been shot at, beaten, chased through the wilderness, and they literally had mud all over their faces. And they were licking each other. All I could think about was the taste of that dirty skin and whether the mine shaft will start crumbling around them.
So yeah, the opposite of sexy. The plot was okay, just not my thing. I rarely like action packed books, and this was no exception. It was hard to suspend my disbelief at times,
Spoilerlike when they made a bonfire by setting fire to pocket lint using a piece of glass and then proceeded to make a bonfire out of dry boards and timber. I'm not sure where they found dry timber though, since it was spring in the mountains and it was mentioned it rained a day or two before.
But who needs logic, right? Anyways, this was a very disappointing read for me, and I don't think I'll continue reading the series.

Short but sweet

I am reading a book about writing M/M romance, because I would like to try writing one of my own. The author is Josh Lanyon so I decided to check out some of his work to know whether or not I trusted his advice or not. It turns out, this was a very good book so I do.

It's more of a novella than a ful length novel, something I usually don't go for, but that may change after really enjoying this.

This story felt different than most romance I read, I think because it was written by a man. It just felt more masculine in the way the MC's thought and how they acted.

I'm probably going to start right in on reading the next book in this series

It just was a really self-indulgent reading experience for me. I could have done without the adventure part, though - I was much more invested in the characters' relationship.

I read this as a short story in a collection of excellent short stories in Hostage. Please read my review there.

Questa è la seconda volta che leggo questo libro e finalmente ha una traduzione adeguata. Questo mi porta ad alzare il voto di una stella, cosa che probabilmente succederà anche con i libri successivi.

So, good. So, so good. Like, I-wish-I-could-have-another-first-born-child-and-name-them-Josh good. I think one of the first rules of entertaining is "always leave them wanting more" and Josh always obliges. 4 fangirling stars.

I've found that I have a type - MC's that are alphas and work in law enforcement. Only complaint was that it was too short… isn't that always the case?

Dangerous Ground started off fairly strong and then fizzled. Will Brandt and Taylor MacAllister have been friends and partners in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security for 3 years. Both gay men, they connected quickly, developed a friendship and working rapport. All went well until Taylor catches feelings for Will and suggests they act on a mutual attraction. Will doesn’t want to mess up their friendship and partnership; and frankly he’s more of a stable, reliable, relationship guy, whereas Taylor runs more towards the impulsive, commitment-shy, having “the mating instincts of a young gazelle” guy. (Mountain gazelles have a polygynandrous (promiscuous) mating system. This means that both males and females have multiple partners during each breeding season. You’re welcome.) Prior to the book starting Taylor gets shitfaced and pulls a “take me to bed, Will” and Will says “No”, and Taylor gets pissed and runs off all mavericky at work the next day and gets himself shot. Now things are weird between them. Will’s all over-protective and Taylor thinks it’s because he feels guilty about the shooting. Will suggests they take a camping trip to reconnect and work out their issues before going back to work post shooting.

Here’s where we join their journey. Will is still being solicitous and worried about Taylor who’s not entirely recovered, and Taylor thinks Will thinks he’s weak and he’s being pissy about it. He’s also not a camping enthusiast and is pissy about the fact that Will’s idea of a vacation seems to be visiting the ninth circle of hell (I can relate, also not being a camping enthusiast). Then just like that, they wander into a crime scene, and now it's all downed planes, dead pilots, piles of money and escaped criminals from the Black Wolf Casino robbery (who parachuted out of the plane).
The bad guys think Will and Taylor have the money and things get kind of dicey, but not before Will decides they should take advantage of the hot spring and “get it out of their system”. Taylor’s a little offended because he really has feelings for Will and wants more but he’s certainly not going to turn him down. Will and Taylor are okay together, but they do not light my fire. Then there's the second sex scene – when they’re both at least a day unbathed, sweaty, muddy, dirty and Taylor’s barfed…no thank you. I started out on the edge of my seat and wound up wanting to wrap things up already. There is nothing necessarily off putting about either Taylor or Will, but they don’t really grab me wither. 2 stars instead of 3 since I’m done.
