A Daredevil Snared
2 Stars

In this installment, Caleb Frobisher is on a mission to find the mine in which the missing residents of Freetown are being forced to work. Once there, he encounters Miss Katherine Fortescue and sets about keeping the prisoners safe until a rescue force arrives.

Series note: As the books in the series all focus on a developing story arc, it is recommended that they be read in order.

Unfortunately, this series is not living up to its potential. The most significant problem in this book is the overly repetitious descriptions. Every single setting, event and character action or motivation is reiterated over and over. In fact, very little actually happens in the story and it feels as if Laurens is simply filling the pages so that she can complete the book and move on to the final installment.

Caleb and Katherine's characterization is abysmal. Despite his description as a daredevil, no details of his reckless past are provided, and neither is their any information on the financial struggles that led to Katherine becoming a governess in Freetown. Moreover, their romance is weak as they have zero chemistry and it is never clear why they develop feelings for each other.

If I weren't invested in finding out how the prisoners are rescued and the backers in London caught and punished, I would not bother with the final book.

Youngest of four brothers, Captain Caleb Frobisher has been sent into the jungle to discover the whereabouts of a camp that has been stealing English people from a nearby village and putting them to work in the diamond mines. When he is captured, he uses his chance to embed himself in the mine and be able to work from the inside until their back up arrives.
Katherine Fortescue was one of the young ladies captured from the village. She has barely been hanging on to hope but seeing Caleb reignites the spark. Seeing him also ignites a spark of a different kind. Is it possible she has found true love?
A nice addition to the series but several parts could have been cut out.

This book was really fun and interesting and the male lead drank a lot of respect women juice, which is rare for these kind of books. I just wish the ending had been better

Review - My least favourite of the series so far because it seems to lose some of the continuity of the previous books in the series. Nevertheless, I think that it was cleverly handled and I can see that it could be quite an important part of the overall storyline of the series.

Terrific adventure. Part 3 of 4 part Adventurers Quartet involving blood diamond mine, Africa in Regency England, and a seafaring aristocratic family. Must read full series in order as truly interconnect with story arc moving from one to the next, the adventure growing from one to the next as well.

My audio re-read has me liking it just as much as when I read it in print! And Steve West continues to deliver an excellent audio experience. His intonation and pitch selections for the myriad characters is spot on IMHO.

In this penultimate book to the quartet, the third and youngest brother, Caleb, arrives in Freetown and locates the mine, managing to send critical information back to London within days of arrival. Caleb and most of his men, along with his fellow captain and friend Pierre of The Raven and his men, settle in to monitor the situation while waiting for the rescue team to arrive from London. Meanwhile in the mine, they captives have hope again that they will be rescued after Caleb successfully connects with one of the younger captives who is allowed out to collect fruit and nuts every day. Alas, this also leads to Caleb and his men being captured.... which may in the end make the difference when rescuers arrive.

One of the things so interesting in these books is the information learned about diamond mining and British colonialism in Freetown.

My least favorite of this series. Soooooo slow....so many details about diamond mining. And the Romance happens so quickly as to not make much sense. Heroine is not developed very well wither.
