After the events in Ashes, Alex is on the run from Rule. She wants to look for Tom, but she's soon captured by a group of Changed - teenagers turned into flesh-eating zombies - led by Wolf. Surprisingly, the Changed don't eat Alex alive, although they'd very much like to. She seems to come to an understanding with Wolf, who spares her life. In the meantime, we learn what happened to Tom. He's been rescued by an elederly couple and living with them. He wants to find Alex, even though he's led to believe she's dead. Moreover, things are happening in Rule. Chris wants to find Alex, too, while his friend Peter is taken by a group of men with evil intentions.
There are many, many point of views in Shadows. A whole lot of them; so many that I lost count. I hope you remember the characters in Ashes well, because everyone comes back and has their say. Moreover, each scene is left off on a cliffhanger, before the focus shifts somewhere else. This was extremely frustrating, and slowed down the pacing, too. Apart from that, this was a good book, although not as good as the previous one. Many things happen, but we're not provided with many answers. We still don't know why the pulse happened, what acused it, and why some were spared. We do know now what happened to Tom and Ellie, at least.
I liked this book, but the first installment of the series was much better. I have high hopes for the final book - I hope for some answers, at the very least.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Ashes," the first book in the trilogy, but I was mostly disappointed with this one. I felt like it was much more random and unstructured, like the author didn’t have much of a plan and just made it up as she went along. I had trouble following all the different characters’ perspectives and all their wandering. Still, when the action picked up in the second part of the book and the two main storylines finally came together, I did enjoy it more. I’m hoping that this middle book is just a weak link and that the third book in the trilogy finishes strong.

After the amazingness that was Ashes, Shadows was a bit of a disappointment for me.
I felt that the book dragged out so much that it became dull and tedious, and I struggled through the last third or so. I also struggled to keep up with all of the subplots and switches between POVs; there was far too much going on (but not a hell of a lot actually happened, wtf) for my brain to handle and I found myself confused as hell more often than not >_<
I have to say that I'm not too keen on the direction that the Changed have been taken, either. I don't know, the fact that they "party" and have orgies kinda kicked the horror factor down a few notches.
Of course, I'll be checking out the third and final novel of the series when it's released; I just hope that it manages to blow my socks off ... something that Shadows failed to do.

Liebes Shadows,
du bist ein riesigengroßer Sadist. Wahrscheinlich hast du das von deiner Mutter Ilsa J. Bick. Die hat dich ja zu dem gemacht, was du bist. Gib es zu, ihr labt euch daran mir als Leser und den Figuren eurer Welt Schmerzen zuzufügen, physisch, psychisch, die ganze Palette. Wenn ich Nägelbeißer wäre, hätte ich nach den 500+ Seiten keine mehr gehabt. Du bist einfach so scheißespannend! Jedes noch so kurze Kapitel endet in einem Cliffhanger oder einer Vorausdeutung, die mich dazu gezwungen haben zur nächsten Seiten zu blättern. Eigentlich kamen mir manche Kapiteleinteilungen eher überflüssig vor, weil es inhaltlich nahtlos weitergeht, aber was tut man nicht alles fürs Adrenalin?
Als wenn das nicht schon Hochpuls genug wäre, kommt dazu noch deine Vorliebe des Quälens. Es macht dir so viel Spaß Alex und Tom immer wieder um Haaresbreite aneinander vorbei schleichen zu lassen. Die beiden kommen sich manchmal so nahe und nur ich der Leser weiß das und KANN EINFACH NICHTS MACHEN! Du hast mir echt mehrmals das Herz gebrochen, nur um mir kurz darauf ein kleines Tübchen Klebstoff zu reichen, damit du danach auch wieder was zum kaputtmachen hast. Mal ganz abgesehen von den ganzen Ekel erregenden bis gruseligen Zombiemomenten. Immer wenn ich gedacht habe, schlimmer geht’s nicht mehr, hast du mir mit süffisantem Grinsen das Gegenteil bewiesen.
Am Anfang hast du mich in Sachen Gedächtnistraining ganz schön gefordert. Trotz intensiver Vorbereitung (aka eine Zusammenfassung der Autorin zu Band 1) habe ich nach den ersten paar Kapiteln ernsthaft darüber nachgedacht mich noch mal mit deiner großen Schwester Ashes zu verabreden, damit sie mir mal „schnell“ (hust) erzählt, was bei ihr eigentlich so Sache war. Aber man kennt das ja, die knappe Lesezeit, die vielen Büchern, das Aufraffen zum Rereaden... . Ich habe es schließlich ohne Ashes geschafft mich in dir zurecht zu finden, was ehrlich gesagt ein wenig unbefriedigend war. Ich hätte gern das volle Erlebnis gehabt. Andererseits lag das vielleicht auch gar nicht an meinem Gedächtnis. Du musst schon zugeben, deine Handlungsstränge sind recht komplex und nicht immer so leicht zu durchschauen. Außerdem hat jede einzelne deiner Figuren mindestens ein Geheimnis und tut nach außen immer ganz anders als es innen aussieht.
Blöderweise konnte ich mit deinem ganzen Gerede über Waffen und Bomben nicht viel anfangen – und das ist eines deiner Lieblingsthemen. Ich war schon froh, wenn ich irgendwelche Buchstabenkürzel überhaupt als Pistole oder Gewehr identifizieren konnte. Mächtig beeindruckend, was für Ahnung du von der Materie zu haben scheinst. Nur etwas schwer nachvollziehbar und verständlich für mich.
Alles in allem hatte ich eine fantastische, wenn auch sehr qualvolle Zeit mit dir. Das fand ich toll. Ich kann die Ankunft deiner kleinen Schwester Monsters kaum erwarten. Ich hoffe, es dauert nicht mehr so lange. Wenn doch werde ich diesmal wohl wirklich eine Komplettlesung der Trilogie einplanen.
