It took me some time but I managed. It's not that the story isn't good but it didn't grab me and the main character isn't my favorite. I get it, you're not like other girls. You're right tho I've never spoken to a 17 year old who likes to cut open cadavers.
Thomas on the other hand, you're always welcome baby.
I do think the story is written in 'older English' using some hard words (English isn't my first language) so I sometimes missed Thomas hitting on Aubrey but I liked it. Will give the second one a chance but mainly because of Thomas tbh

I picked this book up totally on a whim and I realized that I had a totally different idea in my head of what this book was. For some reason, I thought it would be like a YA Outlander of sorts and was a time travel romance story? Let's just say I was completely wrong.
This novel follows a 17-year-old girl named Audrey Rose who attempts to solve the case of Jack the Ripper with the help of her handsome and witty companion, Thomas Cresswell — all while society shames her for being a lady who likes science.
This actually turned out to be one of my favorite books that I read in April. It is set in the late 1800's, which I'm absolute sucker for, and I adored the romance. The writing is good and Maniscalco's horrific descriptions of dead bodies and murders were and amazing addition that definitely sets her apart in the YA world.
My only issue with this book was the plot twist. I saw it coming from about 100 miles away. I honestly just wish that she had done something revolutionary with the twist. I'm always hoping YA mystery authors will surprise me with their unexpected culprits, but I'm almost always disappointed. (btw, if you have any YA recs with incredible plot twists let me know)
All in all: great characters, great world building, lovely setting — shitty ending. But, I'm honestly so excited to dive into Hunting for Prince Dracula, so lets hope that one ends a little better 🤞🏻

All I have to say is that the book hit a little too personally with the way Audrey Rose's family is and I'm crying my eyes out after finishing it. The only difference is that I don't have a Thomas Cresswell to hold me while I'm trying not break down completely

This is written so well!
Jack the ripper is a serial killer that keeps capturing the world and will probably always do.
This story has been written with respect for the victims and everyone involved, but also with enough creative liberties that it feels "new".
I also love that the author included at the end which liberties they took and for which reason(s).

Monsters were supposed to be scary and ugly. They weren’t supposed to hide behind friendly smiles and well-trimmed hair.
I’d like to remind each man who held such poor opinions of a woman that their beloved mothers were, in fact, women.
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco is perfect for anyone looking to get into mystery or historical fiction. I was completely engaged in it, following the characters and the clue they were discovering that would lead them to the identity of Jack the Ripper. The reason this book is rated 4 stars instead of 5 is for the pure reason that from the first 3 chapters I already knew who Jack the Ripper was.
Character-wise I was completely in love with Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Creswell, them on their own and their banter with each other was a standout part of the book. Audrey Rose was the perfect main character in this type of world, a feminist who was breaking the rules of society for women at the time. And Thomas, who's intelligence and humor made him one of the best parts of the book.
I'm going to include some of my favorite quotes(some are spoilery)
"God had failed me. I’d prayed and prayed the way Mother always said I should, and for what? Death still claimed her in the end."
"Honestly, I couldn’t wait for them to be ready. Just because I studied cadavers didn’t mean I couldn’t appreciate beautiful garments."
"“First things first,” Aunt Amelia said, clapping her hands and ignoring me altogether. “Time to get rid of those disgusting blood-soaked garments. Then we’ll address the matter of your hair.” She scrunched her nose as if she were observing a rodent rummaging through rubbish. I cringed. My hair had been the last thing on my mind after finding a man dead. “Honestly, Audrey Rose, you’re far too pretty and too old to be running around like a tomboy,” she said. “Bring your needle and thread down after your bath; it’s high time we worked on your hope chest.”"
"My brother. My sweet, charming, beloved brother was Jack the Ripper."

"“Girls should be concerned with lace, not moral disgrace,” she’d say. I dreamed of a day when girls could wear lace and makeup—or no makeup at all and don burlap sacks if they desired—to their chosen profession without it being deemed inappropriate.""God had failed me. I’ll be honest, I didn’t like the first half of the book but then…then it grew on me. Will be reading the rest of the series (against my better judgement)
