Oh I loved this. Sphinxes. Dead people with votes. Wolf spiders - with babies! Love love love. The running gags across the series were amazing too.

And I cried like a baby at the end. Might cry right now.

I was leaning towards 4 stars for this, but the last 1/3 of the book pulled it up to 5 stars. Especially the afterword, which actually made me cry, completely unexpected.

Oddly enough, miles was my least favourite POV in this book.

I still love him though.

My god, my heart hurts.

The book was okay? Another ridiculous Miles caper, not one that stands out in the run.

And then the end. Amidst swearing and sobbing and shooting whiskey from the bottle, Jasmine brought me tea. But my heart still hurts.
Fuck, said Miles, and took the words right out of my mouth.
Fuck.

On the surface, this is just another formulaic Miles Vorkosigan story and something of a lackluster one at that. The series is clearly winding down with this entry and doesn’t have much more ground to cover. As usual though, the theming under the surface is on point, and is a poignant reflection on mortality and living in the present. I’m never sad to be in this world and I’m still glad for the read.

Compelling read

Compelling read. Less intense than previous books but a clever story none the less. I thought Nina and Jin might have got to see a horse in the end!

Interesting thoughts about life and death: what would happen if people could be frozen forever just before their death, to be revived at some point when the cure for whatever's killing them is discovered? Plus lots of corporate chicanery. Fun story but a little wandering at parts.

The cryogenic corporations of Kibou-danini, facing a mature market, are looking to expand to Komarr. Miles, as Lord Auditor, is dispatched to investigate some fishy proposals, and naturally, discovers a web of conspiracy and corruption.

The long anticipated new Miles book! I tried so hard to read this book slowly to savor it, since who knows if there will be another. Clearly, I did not succeed. It wasn't even the sort of story that had to be voraciously devoured because it was impossible to put down. If anything, it was action-lite for a Miles book. Instead, the pages just melted away. It was just so warm and fuzzy to read anything about these characters again. I was really amused that everyone kept commenting how hyper/insane Miles was since in comparison to his younger days, he's really mellowed! The plot, writing, characters were excellent as always.

Oh, it's the last full length book in this series. I'm sad it's pretty much over! I've got the collection of SSs still to read, but that's it. I was about 1/5 into this book when I thought, "How is she going to make this a full-length book?" The next time I checked, I was almost finished and there was certainly enough to fill the thing! I very much enjoyed this one. I don't think it's my favorite, but it's pretty high up there. This was a great series.
