I lost interest halfway through. It just started to feel like a teenager wrote it. The characters didn't feel like real people. The dialogue wasn't good. The story is interesting. I like the idea of this book, but not how it's written.

This book was so much better than I thought it would be. I added it to my TBR earlier this year because Goodreads recommended it to me in the "historical fiction" genre. I have always been curious about Norse history, but most of my historical fiction forays have stayed in the Tudor era. It was really cool to delve into this historical fantasy novel (as the authour put it at the end of the book) and learn about Norse history. I loved the magical, witchy elements—it felt like the perfect autumn read. I adored the characters: Gunnhild and Oddny, whilst flawed and extremely different, were so engaging to read about. There were also some really tense moments in the book that made me scared to keep reading. I felt emotional at the end of the book, and that's when it hit me that I was more attached to these characters and their stories than I had thought. A really great read. 4.75 stars—I'm a sucker for flawed characters, sisterly bonds, magic, and enemies-to-lovers, and I enjoyed the time period more than I thought I would. I've already added Gornichec's book The Witch's Heart to my TBR. I really recommend this!

Pagan Norway - sisters Oddny and Signy are best friends with Gunnhild, the local leader's daughter. As a toddler, a seer spoke Gunnhild's future - though all refuse to share the details. A seer comes again with the girls on the brink of womanhood - their futures tied together, though again the seer refuses to share the entire vision.
Desperate to save her friends and have a decent life, Gunnhild runs away with the seer.
Years later, the friends are reunited - Signy stolen to be sold, Oddny and Gunnhild determined to find her; each begin their true destiny.
Rich with lore, humor, found family and magic, this historical fantasy will consume your thoughts. Loved it!

The first three parts of the book are good, for sure. But the end is just disappointing. It feels rushed. It needed at least another 100 pages. Why create such tension through the whole book, only to let it fall down so miserably, without much action or explanation. A character not willing to talk about the trauma they lived is not an excuse to dismiss it. Could have been great, ended being just ok.
