Another magic police procedural in much the same vein as the first one, except this time there's some awkward romance shoe-horned in that is too telltale in its outcome due to the nature and structure of the book. Aaronovitch seems not quite certain how to juggle dual story lines, clumsily trying to tie them together while also trying to resolve only one of them so that the other may spill over into the next book.
This is entertaining stuff, and Aaronovitch is effectively fleshing out his cast and making them more endearing, but it's not expertly constructed. Plus the man really should curb his Doctor Who references. We get it.

Jazz musicians are dying of magic and a mysterious Black Magic practitioner makes his appearance. This one was pretty standard, a sophomore jinx only, I hope.

I didn’t think this was a genre for me but some magic seduced me to open the cover. This is my second book in the series and I continue to enjoy the humour in the writing style. Magic allows a certain leniency with facts but I think the writer delivers a smirk at every page, notwithstanding the metaphysical antics.

These are going to be like candy for me, aren't they? I'm loving Aaronovitch's writing style and the "voice" of the main character. Very enjoyable stories, and I look forward to absorbing the rest.

Readable, with a slightly murky plot that drags a bit in the middle but comes together for a climax which still manages to leave a few dangling threads and some tantalising clues about the future of the series.

Because Peter Grant is likable, and wants to believe in the good in people, he's a good character to root for. This book has less about the river gods and more about a mystery involving Jazz. Interesting and sets itself up firmly as a good series.
I see comparisons to Dresden Files, but appreciate the multicultural angle a lot more in this series.

It had been quite a bit since I’d read a book in this series, and that one had been a little further in the series than this one. I started reading and was drawn in pretty much right away. While I not hugely fond of the varied descriptions of the London and its environs, probably because I’m not British, but other than that I just loved everything. I felt so much for poor Peter for certain events in this book even though I wondered. I definitely want to read more in this series especially since this one is so very good. Part mystery, part magic, all great writing. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
