DNF — Audiobook — Could not hold my interest and I felt like we were skipping around a lot. This was my first JR Ward book, and it seems to tie closely into a different series of hers I haven’t read, maybe that has something to do with it?

*this e-arc was sent to me by the publisher to give an honest review in return*

This was a good book. Taken place in the same universe as the Black Dagger Brotherhood world, this is about Lydia who loves protecting wolves and finds out they are being poisoned by the hotel owners. Now there are murders and mysterious guy Daniel is hiding something. First I have to say that you might want to read the Black Dagger Brotherhood books as it would be easier to understand the story and the characters. Some people might be fine with it but the reason the stars got dropped was that I didn't understand some chapters and the world as much. I do have to say that the writing was well done with a great plot, pacing, and story structure but I wish I knew the world more so I could have been hooked all the way into the story.

I enjoyed the main character Lydia who is brave and is passionate about wolves. She had good character development and more to come in future novels. My favorite part of the book was Daniel because omg was he HOT. He didn't really have a character development but I think there will be in the future books. There were a lot of side characters in this book but sadly they weren't described well and I figured out why which was because they were from the other series. I felt left out in the story as I only knew about the new characters and not what the side characters were talking about. Now the romance which was a slow burn trope. I enjoyed the steamy romance in this book and I loved the steamy scenes!

Now with the ending, it ended in a CLIFFHANGER!!! I haven't read any books with a cliffhanger in a long time! I wish I could rate this book higher because the parts I understood were good but tbh I mostly didn't understand the story. I wish in the summary it was notified to readers that they should read the Black Dagger Brotherhood series first. Most stars were just lost to being lost but I will be reading the other books first and then rereading this one at one point in my life.

I was excited for this series but I found myself wondering how the BDB world was involved in this story with the wolves. I think the world-building that was done left a little something out as far as the storyline with this first book. I wasn't sure what was happening at WSP, what the deal was with Daniel and what the hell happened with Lydia at the end. I'm hoping book 2 moves more into the storyline so we can understand exactly what's going on.

3.5 stars, rounded to 4

Claimed almost read like it was written by a different author. No name/brand-dropping or excessive use of slang here. It was also more of a paranormal mystery/romantic adventure than the straight paranormal romance that Ward typically writes. It was a welcome surprise!

Claimed ends on a cliffhanger, so be prepared to wait until 2022 for the next installment. Xhex, Blade, Rehv, and John Matthew briefly make appearances througout the story. I hope Ward really builds a Wolven world, because I'm intrigued.

I had such high expectations for this book and sadly I was disappointed. Have you ever read a book that was boring, but well written and you just had to see how it would play out? That was me reading this book. I found the romance between Daniel and Lydia to be lacking chemistry and I didn’t feel the connection. I was curious to see what was happening to the wolves. The subplot with Xhex was very interesting and when you’re more interested in the subplot of a 500 page book that’s a problem. There were a few twist in the book. One I did see coming and the other caught me by surprise. The story does end on a cliffhanger and I honestly don’t think I will continue on with this series. I love the Black Dagger Brotherhood world this author has created and I will stick to those novels.

I can't. I just can't with this book, y'all. Too much of the plot remains unexplained until the very end in that we-are-witholding-clues-the-whole-time-like-the-way-they-do-in-Murder-She-Wrote, but then wrap it up in the last seven minutes and all's well that ends well (except it doesn't...I'll explain later). Too much Nancy Drew / Hardy Boys sluething with a heaping side of blatant tampering with evidence by our heroine, Lydia, that was really off putting. Yeah, okay, she was trying to protect a wolf pack reintroduced into a wildlife perserve in upstate New York, but really? We're going to commit a felony by tampering with evidence/withholding evidence to protect the wolves when people are dying all around you under suspicious circumstances? Really? Really? Come to find out that our hero, Daniel, the loner and drifter and sexy McDreamy works for a shadow government agency. (He isn't the shapeshifter afterall, btw. It's--surprise!--Lydia, who shapeshifts into her true form, a wolf, to protect Daniel at the deanouemont. Earlier in the novel, a hiker is killed on the wildlife perserve and now that this novel is over, are we to assume it was Lydia who killed the poor man in her wolf shapeshifter guise? We, the dear gentle readers slogging through this quagmire of a murder plot / amatuer detective sluething / evidenc tampering or withholding aren't given any clues that this poor hiker was up to no good? Was he there to poison the wolves? We don't know; after all, at the end of the novel, it's revealed that Lydia's very own coworker was responsibile for poisoining the wolves released on the wildlife preserve. So, um....yeah, no. I love me some BDB. I love me some Warden. But I just can't with this spinoff series. The sexy times do not make up for all the other bullshit.
