What can you say about a book that sparked an entire subgenre in the late '00s/early '10's? I haven't read many YA dystopians but one definitely stands out. All others copy it in some way. Not my favorite of the trilogy, but does a great job of setting worldbuilding and presenting a story just fleshed out enough to not be bogged down in details.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Can't help myself. So looking forward to getting the second book. These books are like crack - like Harry Potter and Twilight before them.

A lot of people really enjoy this dystopian series, and I can definitely see why. I did have a little bit of difficulty getting into the text, but once I did, I read through the majority of it in an afternoon. The language was not particularly complex, nor where the underlying themes, however, the plot points are certainly difficult to grip with. My feelings for the main character, Katniss, were mixed. On the one hand, she honorably and entirely cares for the people she has allegiance to. On the other hand, she is sometimes cold with her treatment of others. That said, considering the world she lived in, her personality was no more than would be expected. She is strong, level headed, and her treatment of her younger sister and Rue are all admirable--I think she makes a good role model for young women.

The books are so much better than the movies. Katniss feels like a real teenager with trauma not just some survival is young woman. Peeta has so much more sassy and savvy. Haymitch too has some more depth but him and the other characters are about the same. The realities of this harsh dystopian hit harder coming to understand them with Katniss and her inner monologue rather than just observing it on screen. The illustrations are nice for the fans but convey such meaning in being down black and white. As well as the specific scenes not just being book and film favorites, but holding deep meaning to Katniss.
Moderate: Child death, Death, Violence, Blood, Grief, War, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Death of parent

An okay fantasy read. This is definitely the best book in the series. The love triangle introduced though is cliche and annoying, and it's hard to root for the main character at all. The best thing about this book and series may be the universe. Without a doubt though, this series has been made unfairly famous through Hollywood while series like the Gentleman Bastards, the Kingkiller Chronicles, and Mistborn are ignored. Jennifer Lawrence is a goddess though, so it's hard to be too mad.

Read all three books in the trilogy on a Mexican vacation and now I understand why my educator friends who teach this book love it. By the third installment (in three days), I grew a bit weary of the constant death-and-gore fantasy, but the book is so full of parallels to explore, Big Questions to ponder and rip-snorting action that the reader is sucked in until the end.
