Read alongside graphic audio (part 1 only) and regular audiobook. First re read since 2018. the initial 20chapters were tedious and I disliked the writing. The first persona narrative had far too much inner reflection. Some of the sexy moments were hot. But I most enjoyed the sarcasm of Rhysand and Lucien. Plenty of clues and foreshadowing of future plots.

I was in the mood for an engaging fantasy novel, and this scratched the itch. Does it live up to the hype? Absolutely not—the characters are flat and one-dimensional, the story is incredibly derivative, and the writing gets very repetitive. But was it enjoyable in a fluff-read way? Sure, and I liked reading it even though I almost wished I didn’t. Will I read the rest of the series? Probably not.

Deals with some heavier topics and with some very descriptive content similar to the hunger games. Definitely leans more towards college age young adults than teenagers.

While my largest issues with the book are probably my incorrect assumptions about the book, the easiest one to identify and really knock the finished work for is it’s pacing. It took me months to push through the first 60% of the book, then finished the last 120 pages in a night - and it wasn’t necessary to see what would happen but because it finally felt like story was moving forward, even if I didn’t like the actual substance of it. Will probably give the second book a shot to see if it’s pace is closer to my desired speed, but I’m not itching to read more about these characters from this author.
