This is what I wanted the Mercy Thompson series to be but it wasn't!! Where as Mercy's series is enjoyable enough but nothing too spectacular, and it lends itself to unfavorable comparisons to the Kate Daniels' series....this series captures the potential of this world. It has flavors of Anne Bishop's The Others series, but in decidedly positive manner. Some similarities that capture some of what I really enjoyed in The Others series, but different and unique enough to stand solidly on its own.

The characters are more interesting....the relationship dynamics are more interesting...the setting is more interesting....

I really really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to the other ones of the series!

As a side note, one thing I have consistently found with Patricia Briggs' books is that she makes me want to visit the places the books are set in! I'm not entirely sure how she does it....It isn't flowery purple prose or anything of that sort...I just find myself wanting to plan road trips to the places in the stories. And if nothing else, the ability to make me set a book down and think "Man! I really want to go see The Dalles" is a pretty impressive skill.

I honestly don't know how to feel about this book. My very first response was probably... confusion. I made sure it was listed as book one when I got it. Then after getting into it I had to check again because I thought maybe I misread. It said book 1 when I checked and so I read on. Yet it still seemed... weird. So I did some research and come to find out there is an 81 page novella that takes place before this. So I stopped this book and got the prequel quick.
First of all-what are you thinking Amazon for trying to sell an 81 page audiobook for $20. Wtaf. But anyway it was a very annoying process. Why couldn't these two "books" just be combined into one 300ish page book. I don't get it. Very frustrating.

Anyway moving on. I enjoyed the story I guess. There was nothing wrong with it. It felt too short in my opinion. It felt a little rushed. I still can't tell if that's intentional or not.

It felt weirdly... immature. It had adult content, yet the writing style seemed YA to me. That's not necessarily a bad thing. However not what I'm looking for right now. I don't know if I will continue the series or not. I enjoy the world but... I'm jut not sure how I feel about the book as a whole all things considered.

Really good at first but the middle just dragged on and on. It got to the point were I just wanted it to be over. Sadly I will not be reading any more books in this series after this one

I liked it

I liked it but not as much as I liked tbr mercy Thompson series. It seemed strange, impersonal and oddly written. I'm not sure it briggs was trying something new but third person doesnt seem to suit her writing style. Of course I'm reading this after finishing the mercury Thompson series so hopefully the writing improves over the series. It was a good book, thoughy out well and entertaining. I just hope theres a lot of improvement in future reads.

TW - rape, gang rape

I wanted to like this so badly but there were just too many glaring issues. The author using the "Magical Indian/Indigenous Person Trope", everyone woman in this book BESIDES the main character Ana are awful evil bitchy women (this also happens in the prequel novella "Alpha and Omega".), and there's implied sexual assault an gang rape that the main character had to endure for three years and it was not dealt with properly (it shouldn't have been in the book at all).

I liked Charles and I wanted to like this book but I just couldn't. Here are some other issues; the pacing was very slow so 50% of the way through the book, nothing had taken place. It was all just character conversations and backstory. I read in someone else's review that this book is supposed to take place over the course of a day, I didn't see that in the book myself but I do admit that I have no idea how many days are supposed to have passed during the duration of this book so it definitely could have taken place over the course of one day.

The spicy scene okay, I'd give it 1 chili/ out of 5🌶️

Overall I give this book two stars out of five stars.
