The Movement doesn't need more martyrs is a saying that can apply today as it did in 1970s when Walker penned Meridian. This timeless classic explores race, identity and personal development through the eyes of a young Black woman during the post Civil Rights era. It's hard not to be besotted with Meridian at the end of this novel, I dare you to try!

So it took me a long time to finish it but i guess that was because i am lazy. But i did enjoy this book . It's very well written and gave me so much beautiful quotes. It sometimes angered and sometimes satisfied the feminist in me. It is the first proper book i finished after a long time, so cheers to that

This book was written so well I don't completely understand it. This is the kind of book I'd want to read in an English class so as to understand it and be able to discuss it with others. Really enjoyed it, incredibly well written. Quick read.

This book was tough to get through, not only is the writing a bit too dry for me but there’s also lots of graphic descriptions of rape

The more things change, the more they stay the same. I chose this book to read as part of a challenge to read a book published the year you were born (for me, that's 1976). While certainly this book feels its age, in spots, occasionally, it's largely contemporary to everything that's happening in the US still. The title protagonist suffers, in what often feels like a passive way, as many of us do, sleepwalking through much. The suffering feels a bit Christlike in moments, the weight of the world (or at least a misguided, meandering, back-looking country) on her shoulders, as she is surrounded by Judases, by Pilots and Pharisees, by so many needy people craving a miracle or maybe just a handout/hand up. Yet she ultimateley chooses life and herself over death and others, without compromising to the system or those around her. My only criticism is that it was little hard for me to initally get into, and to follow in places.

This was an insightful book with beautiful writing. Meridian by Alice Walker tackles racism, sexism, feminism, and colorism through different stories through Meridian, Truman and Lynne. It's refreshing to see how black people see white people and what they think of them instead of the other way around. This book just takes you in neutral ground, presenting flaws on both sides of white and black. The book is really just in the middle of it all, like Meridian, our main character. Who does not side with anyone, even knowing the 'right' thing or the 'correct' thing to do. I only gave it four stars because I wasn't satisfied with the ending but overall I really enjoyed this thought-provoking book.

This book was in my cue, so I didn’t read the description. Although the book was set in the South during the Civil Rights era, it is so relevant now - even without the civil unrest that is happening now. The style in which this book is written made it tougher for me to follow.
