3.5 stars: This series feels like watching a fantasy shoujo anime

I was pleasantly surprised by this YA Fae Fantasy Book. I discovered this series for free on YouTube (the author has uploaded the whole series), and I really enjoyed it.

The story takes place in an Academy, where only People with special abilities can attend. Their goal is to become Fae and protect the world.
But not everything is what it seems...

The first half hour of the book gave me bully romance vibes, but it didn't turn into one.
I really liked the POV of Reina and Kai. Both struggle differently, have mixed feelings towards each other, but still rely on one another.

The Romance aspect of the story is not the complete focus here, but still present. There is much room to grow, tough. And I hope we'll get that in the other books.

→ Tropes ←
- Upper YA Fantasy
- Fae Academy
- Childhood Friends to Enemies to Friends
- Hate to Love
- BIPOC rep
- No spice here (but maybe in the later books)

⚠️Safety: Mention of death of parents (FMC is an orphan), OMD/ FMC has a relationship with someone else, no cheating, MMC slightly bullied FMC at the beginning

I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is all my own thoughts and honest opinions.

OH. MY. GOD. THIS BOOK WAS PHENOMENAL. I finished it in 5 hours last night. I literally could not put it down.

While the idea of magic / powers at an academy isn't new, this one has a fresh take on the idea that left me in a book hangover. I'm going to be honest, I always fall hard for the enemies-to-lover trope. Reina and Kaito are very similar in a way to Jude and Cardan from the Folk of the Air series. I had just finished that series and I started this one, it definitely cured my hangover from their relationship.

As for the main characters:

Reina is optimistic, determined and very loyal. She is the main protagonist, powerless in and world of powers. Despite her being a "serf" (someone without powers) she holds her own and never lets anything get in her way of one day attending the Academy. She has been through some incredible trauma and is resilient in her recovery. Although, it all eventually catches up to her.

Kaito, our leading male, is egotistical, self-centered and kinda toxic to Reina. His only cares are for power and for fame. He's had a very privileged and wealthy upbringing but that doesn't come without consequences.

In middle school, Kaito and Reina were best friends, but that all changed when Kaito developed powers and Reina didn't. Kaito becomes the most powerful and adored person in their school while Reina is bullied for being a "serf". Despite the odds, both Reina and Kaito get into the Academy and face their own challenges. The Academy - a prestigious school for students with the most powerful and elite powers, with the goal to eventually become a "Fae". Even thought Reina has been bullied since her middle school years, she comes to realize that her challenges are only going to get harder as she progresses through the Academy. And Kaito isn't welcomed with the open-arms he thought he was going to get.

I highly recommend this book / series if you love stories about enemies-to-lovers, magical powers and finding a strength when you've believed you had nothing but weakness.

Brittni Chenelle, thank you for this book and the rest of the series, you have made a fan out of me for life! I can't wait to read the next 2 books!

I greatly enjoyed this book

I went into this book with the expectation of fae being.. well Fae. Brittni's fae are unlike any fae you've ever encountered before.

the entire world she's created for Kai and Reina to evolve and grow in.. the friends they interact with, the lessons they learn about their world and about themselves. it's all powerful and unique. A look on what people do and how they act when they have power compared to others, and how we face the world when dealing with those who have power over us.

I am eagerly awaiting the release of the next book so I can see what happens next.

3.5 STARS ✨

I need to start off by saying that the lovely author of this series has placed the full length audiobooks up for free on her YouTube channel. I, personally, have always struggled to get into audiobooks. Even during my degree, my lecturers would always suggest listening to the audiobook, and I just wasn't having it, I couldn't focus on them. However, on the day I started The Fae & The Fallen, I was on the train home, in a reading slump, needing something to distract me because I was feeling anxious. I searched up audiobooks, as you do, and The Fae & The Fallen was the first one I found. And I'm glad I did, because it finally allowed me to delve into the world of audiobooks and enjoy them.

The general story was good. The world is fascinating and almost has a dystopian vibe to it as it discusses the Fae, the Gifted and the domestic sacrifice that comes with having a rare gift. I did enjoy both Reina and Kaito's perspectives, but I do feel as if towards the end of the book, things did begin to feel rushed. Either way, I am still finding that over a month later, I'm still wondering what happened after that cliffhanger. Therefore, I will definitely be listening to the next book in the future.

I do think that this isn't probably a book that I would pick up and read regularly in a written format, as it does read as a younger YA format with some upper YA scenes, and I prefer to read upper YA/NA, but I found it enjoyable as an audiobook!
