Probably 4.5 stars, but I was excited about this, so I am happy to round up.

Such timely, nuanced essays. I look forward to following Tolentino's career in the years to come! I also really appreciated that this felt like a true collection--not just cobbled-together essays that loosely address the theme. There's a definite, apparent through-line, and I also appreciated the mix of personal content with criticism.

I haven’t read anyone else talking about the intersection of social media and feminism like this.

A fascinating dialog of the double standard that women are held to. I really valued her exploration of media, current and historical.

2.5 stars.

Well written and informative, but so, so redundant. I enjoyed Tolentino's writing style for the most part and I appreciated her feminist standpoint on many of these issues, but I found myself more annoyed than not when listening -- as the essays felt long due to constant philosophizing and intellectualizing of modern day occurrences.

there was very little in this book that felt groundbreaking, like an entirely new way of thinking. but that’s because i’m reading this 4 years after it was published, and in the last 4 years this book has shaped so much of our popular culture and our cultural criticism that it has instead become the new baseline. instead of feeling like something new, i felt like i was finally reading the words that had hung around me for almost half a decade.
