I really loved the world she crafted in this book and that's what kept me reading (trying to learn more about the actual nuances of the world and its monsters). At times, it was predictable but it did not make the book any less enjoyable for me. Can't wait to read the next in the series.

Content warnings for lots of gore and violence.

An incredible read from beginning to end. The characters were beautifully balanced and fully fleshed out, the story unique, and the world-building spot on. This is the kind of book a potential author aspires to write.
If I dig hard enough, I might critique a couple of the characters for seeming very black-and-white, or, all evil or all good, one dimensional, but it's easy to brush over when both of the main characters in this are fully fleshed out, fully human characters that you want to follow to the ends of the Earth.
This was a 400 page book that got finished in a day, and if it wasn't 6:30 AM, you'd better believe I'd pick up the second one.
Definitely one I'll come back to, and one I hope to see adapted to the big screen in one way or another as well.

I liked the premise and the world but overall it was disappointing.
SpoilerI expected there to be commentary on who's the actual monster but everything was laid so simply that I felt there was such a missed opportunity. Kate's reason for hating her mother and her personality wasn't explained that well other than she just... misremembers the incident? it felt like an excuse to make her an almost unhinged unstable mc. there was no romance, but I'd dislike forced feelings more so I didn't mind how it was handled. the story also just goes over so quickly and around the same group of people that it felt too simple.

Enjoyed the concept, the idea of monsters coming from monsterous acts. And I enjoyed having two characters on opposite sides and understanding their perspectives.
