This started out terribly. I thought this would be the book I would quit at. When the writer seriously has nothing left to write about and she's just grasping at strings.

My love for dramatic scenes saved the day though and I absolutely fell in love with this book. Plot wise, shit is hitting the fan with this series but who needs plot when you have Bones?!

I walk around the office daily now, expressing my wishes for vampires to exist to anyone who would listen. *sigh*. I hate the real world.

my notes from this book say it all:

- can these bitches stop destroying people's houses dear god
- why am i lowkey team gregor rn
- okay i'm no longer team gregor but bones is pissing me the fuck off
- bro literally WHY is this man mad at her.
- i don't like this book
- i don't care how much i love someone, i don't want them fucking reading my mind 24/7!!!!!! cat is so valid for not wanting bones in her head always.
- ok so i literally don't care what explanation there is, bones actually went and started making out (or more) w some random girl without telling anyone why or that he was leaving, and cat reacted normally but when cat left with gregor to try and SAVE BONES, AND TOLD HIM SHE WOULD COME BACK, he fucking screamed at her, threatened to kill her, and said the most awful things to her, and NO ONE thinks he's in the wrong????? fuck no.
- ok so why am i actually team vlad rn. he's the best by far.
- no. bc bones absolutely does NOT get to play the "you should've let me explain" card rn. fuck you.

clearly, bones was totally ruined for me by this book.

Where the hell do I start with this review???

How about ‘unfrikkinbelievable’????

Or ‘fanfrikkintastic’?????

Smothered in awesome sauce??????

The more I read into this series, the more I absolutely ADORE the characters. This is the fourth installment in the Night Huntress Series and it is amazing and incredible and….well…..SMOTHERED IN AWESOME SAUCE!!

I am so glad I stumbled across this series. The characters, characters that we are now 4 books deep into getting to know and learning to love, never cease to amaze me.

Destined For an Early Grave took us readers to a place that I never in a million years expected. The relationship between Cat and Bones and put to the ultimate (and most heart-wrenching yet) test. Gregor’s claims to Cat and his persistence in trying to retrieve what he believes is his keep getting more and more violent and more and more dangerous for all involved.

Just when I thought that this couple couldn’t go through anything worse than the last novel, Jeaniene Frost opens up the mysterious door #3 and unleashes hell on all of her faithful readers. I kid you not, once I hit the halfway point in this book, it was like a non-stop anxiety attack. Full of suspense and heart ache and lots and lots of anger. At more than a few moments throughout this book, I badly wanted to track someone down who just LOOKED LIKE Gregor and stab them right in the face hole.

Dont let all that anger inducing plot line deter you. This is an great book!! And you should read it. Now. Go ahead. We will be here when you get back.

See??? I told you!! Great book, right?

On a side note, I just want to give a quick mention once again to Tavia Gilbert, the narrator of the audio book version of this title. She’s just fantastic!

Overall, I give Destined For an Early Grave 5 sets of brightly glowing green eyes!!

This book did a good job of portraying the villain for the abusive, manipulative asshole that he is. He took advantage of a 16-year-old Kat by lying to her and grooming her before eventually trying to force himself on her.
Sometimes the logic of the events was hard to follow and it felt like the author had to make excuses to cover up plot holes. For example, the central conflict is that Kat is now married to Bones, but Gregor (however you spell the villain's name) is claiming he married her first when she was a teenager.
Obviously, this would bring up some issues, as this was never mentioned in the previous books and Kat had her first time with her human ex-boyfriend. So to solve this little contradiction, Kat had her memory wiped all those years ago, and drinking vampire blood repairs all your girly bits so you can bleed when you have sex for the first time.
Biological inaccuracies aside (because we don't have time to unpack *all* that), it seems like a rather convoluted excuse for the sake of the plot.
But the book was enjoyable and entertaining. There was a good balance of action and downtime for the characters to plan or react to what just happened. Also, all the characters are endlessly entertaining to watch and get to know. I'm kind of amazed at how unique everyone is.

I ended up compromising on my rating for this one. The first 3/5ths or so of the book only rated 3 stars for me and was starting to head toward 2-star territory. I had been a little disappointed in the last book in the series, "At Grave's End" and was starting to get really worried when this 4th book of the series seemed to be struggling to find it's course. And I really didn't care for the way the main two characters kept getting into arguments over lack of communication. I can't stand that in real life and I just wish Cat and Bones would learn from their prior miscommunications.

But then the novel became totally awesome! Definitely 5 stars for the final 2/5ths of the book as it became evident the author is willing to take risks with her lead character and let the series evolve in new directions. I can't say much more about that without spoilers so just take my word for it. The next book is now a must-read.
