I started this months ago, got distracted and finally picked it back up today. It is the all too common (and realistic) story of how one bad rumor can truly ruin a person’s life. A book about slut-shaming and selfish intent (and in my personal opinion, a little karma). Good read.

Woah. Omg this was amazing. Beautiful. The way if exposes everyone. And the fact that it seems like the end of the world for Alice at the beginning but it isn't not really.

At first I thought the charecters were beyond stereotypical, they were unreal in how deeply they were entrenched in thier cliques. By the end , we know more and we see everything for what it truly is . The insecurities , the cowardice , the arbitrariness. I still think the ending could have better but I must say this book was amazing. It really warmed my heart.

Ok spoilers .....

But boy oh boy , those ppl were all assholes. All of them, the entire goddamn town , with the exception of Kurt's grandma and Alice herself .

I especially hated Elaine and Kelsey , omg such a bitch. I can't even..... I have known some two faced friends and she makes them look like angels.

Josh is a coward. It's hard to hate him seeing how pitiful he actually is.

Even Kurt is an asshole. I mean he knew all the time that Alice didn't do any of that but he didn't say anything ????

Even though he was perfectly aware of how terrible things were getting for Alice ??

He could have told his grandma the truth and she could have spread it along the grapevine , maybe many , if not most ppl wouldn't have believed it but some of them might have. But nope he keeps silent about it.

Then he tells Alice the truth and is angry at her for her calling him an asshole which he is . I mean if he had just decided to keep silent and buried it , it would have been better.

It would still be a dick move but ok , ppl make stupid , cruel mistakes sometimes.

Did he even feel guilty ?? Nope , he actually has the guts to be angry at Alice , for her being angry at him even though he knows she's right to be angry.

That's what ruined the book to me actually. I originally wanted to give it 5 stars but the ending just seemed so wierd .

I mean the author could have explained it saying Kurt felt insecure that she might leave him if she were exonerated.

The author could have made it so Kurt wasn't perfect and buried his mistake instead of revealing it and expecting Alice to be completely fine with it.
I mean hey no one's perfect , not even nerds who use the word " libations ".
We would have understood it , I mean don't get me wrong. Kurt's precious. He really is but I don't understand how he justifies such a glaring mistake to himself.
How he expects Alice to feel it was justified ?

And the worst thing is , it's Alice who says sorry and gets back to him. I mean , wtf ????

I thought in the end , Kurt would realize he was being a stuckup asshole who thought anything he did was justified since he was Alice's only friend . I thought he would come back , apologize to Alice about being a self-righteous dick and realize he wasn't perfect and that Alice would forgive him as after all he did help her a lot and in the end at least he apologized. More than what I can say for those other assholes.

But no, Alice is the one apologizing , why ??? You were perfectly right in being angry at him. If not for his mistake , then for the fact that he thought he was justified.
I mean Kurt tries to apologise but that's only after the letter and Alice cuts him off anyway.

Idk that kinda ruined stuff for me , especially since Kurt is basically built up to be this amazing hero who can do no evil . If that were true he should have realized his mistake and apologized to her. Or atleast surprised her by coming to her house right when she was planning on visiting him and accepting he made a mistake.

Ah well , i guess maybe the author is trying to say that Kurt isn't really an angel. That he has his faults but well since Alice doesn't have much choice , she has to be with him.

Compared to the others , Kurt's an angel that's for sure .
And I got a feeling that Alice didn't really plan on like marrying Kurt or something.
When she said they were going places , I think she meant they would be going different places after spending a while together.
Maybe she was evolving from getting tangled up with major assholes to minor ones like Kurt and later she would leave Healy for college and have the opportunity to evolve further to be a person who loves someone who is actually truly good for them and who doesn't do terrible stuff and expect to be justified !!!!!

But idk I mean I loved Kurt I did. He's not perfect , no one is perfect , i know that. I mean, there's no rule that says someone had to be pure goodness but still .... It felt as if everyone else's faults were exposed under a microscope but Kurt's was just swept underneath the rug

I would like to think that during senior year Kurt realized what a dick he was and actually , truly apologized to Alice .

I would like to think both of them evolve further to see thier mistakes and thier desperation.

I certainly hope so. Alice definitely deserves that. And Kurt sure has the potential to be that. He already is that almost. Almost , not quite yet however.

This story just proves how words are powerful enough to destroy a person, how easily we judge a person based on other people's words (which maybe lies), and how we can find betrayal or friendship in the most unlikely people.

Bla bla bla… Sådan virker hele bogen. Den omhandler meget enkelt to begivenheder.

Faktisk kunne kapitlet med Alice uden problemer have været fjernet. Faktisk kunne hele bogen have været fjernet.

Brandon havde muskler over det hele.

“Jeg har et rygte, jeg skal opretholde, ved du nok”

Da jeg kom gående ind, løftede hun hovedet og kiggede direkte på mig. Lige ind i øjnene på mig.

Desuden er karakterne flade og alle beskrevet som perfekte. Der er ikke en eneste beskrevet, der har fejl. Selv den upopulære er kun beskrevet som underlig og en nørd (altså den klogeste på hele skolen). Selv personen nederst i deres hierarki er perfekt! Bare anderledes. Det hele er så overfladisk og trættende i længden.

Parts I enjoyed. Definitely a teenage read though.

The problem with this book is that I've read it, watched it, heard about it, seen it, etc a million times before. The plot has been done to death, the characters don't stand out in any way. Ultimately, it's boring. It saves itself from a 1 star rating by not actively doing anything wrong, but I can't recommend it.

The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu is a moving story about how rumors and lies can bring on potentially devastating effects. Mathieu writes in a concise manner, keeping the pace of the book on the quicker side, while also introducing teens to the dangers of gossip. I would highly recommend this book to anyone in 9th grade or above, as it takes a firm stance on the issue of shaming someone based off of the circulation of rumors.

This was a great read. I thought it had a good message and that the story was interesting. As for the characters, most of them seemed shallow except for Kurt and Alice. I loved those two. I enjoyed watching their friendship unfold. Also, I thought that the way that the author made the book a powerful read about rumors and how they can destroy people.

Alice might have changed the way she looked, I found her attitude to be inspiring because she still walked those school halls as the students labeled her. I think Kelsie is shallow because she ditched Alice because she wanted to be popular. Josh seemed to be hiding something, and you find out what and why at the end of the book. This book had a lot of shocks and surprises in it. I really enjoyed it. I recommend it to anyone. Overall, a powerful read.
